Over the past month, hundreds of thousands of Monopoly fans worldwide voted for which new token should replace one of the iconic ones being retired after countless journeys past Go. After a hard-fought campaign, representatives revealed the newest game piece Wednesday morning on TODAY.
(Drum roll, please.)
Monopoly’s newest token is…
The makers of Monopoly decided to modernize the game a bit by adding a new token and retiring one of the classics. The TODAY anchors chat about the new token, as voted by the public, which will replace the iron.
The cat!
To rally players to show their support for their favorite tokens, Hasbro launched a Facebook app. While the results among the 250,000 votes on TODAY.com’s live poll were close, the feline edged out its competition: the robot, diamond ring, helicopter and guitar.
It’s sad news for some, as the sly cat will replace one of the game’s venerable pieces, which has also been chosen by voters. The boot, iron and wheelbarrow were tied for last place until Tuesday night when the wheelbarrow and shoe hung on and the iron got the boot.

The vote shows that there are a lot of people out there that probably don't know what an iron is or that so hate the drudgery of ironing that by voting it off the game board, they are voting it out of their lives. HA!!
In today's world, most people don't know what an iron is. I still iron my work clothes and haven'f found a good steam iron for years. T

Another american tradition bits the dust.. Getting bad they always want to change the games, we played as Kids.... Just like Obama said that he will give change in his first term sure has screwed the country up like the presidents before him. with his changes. The last good Democrat we has as president was JFK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, wow - I spend a few days with someone several years ago and we played that a lot - the only time I ever played it, but it was GREAT!!
glad I still have one of the original games (late 80's). I just used the iron a few weeks ago in a game with my husband and granddaughter. :(

"the original games" where not out out in the 1980's. parker brothers started production in 1935 with Charles Darrow marketing the game himself for 2 years before that. there are other tokens that are no longer in the game like the pig, bath tub, and horse&rider.
Oh, great. Teaching children that it's o.k. to pick a cat up by its tail. Guess I'll pick up some Johnson & Johnson stock as well as Hasbro, since there'll be a run on the "old" version of the game. ;)
The cat is ultra-cool, I like it, but they should ahve kicked out the THIMBLE!! When I was a kid that was the most ostracized game piece.

I'm almost surpised that Americans didn't vote for an automatic weapon to be the new token - the gun nuts seem to hold a monopoly in congress...
Luckily you have it backwards, the gun nuts, or hoplophobes, don't have a monopoly on Congress.
Does anyone even know what an Iron is anymore? Most men never did, women's lib eliminated the ladies and generational changes and non-wrinkle materials eliminated the rest.

If you take the iron out of the old game and put it with the new game, you haven't lost anything. But then again, if you have the old game, why would you buy the new one.
The one change I would like to see, instead of go to jail, you get a divorce and lose half your stuff.
And if you are playing with a female, you have to give half your stuff to her.
Another obvious marketing ploy to get the products name into the media. PETA does the same thing , making outrageous claims and accusations to generate interest in their agenda.

Um, just add the extra piece? Wouldn't that mean increasing the number of available players? That would than increase the amount of money they put in the game and the number of houses and hotels available. Simply keeping the token in wouldn't work.

I love it!! It's a very nicely designed kitty. I would actually play the game again, if I could be the kitty.
I never liked the old boot or the iron, so I can rest easy today knowing the iron is going.
