Does Jamaican flavor of Volkswagen's Super Bowl ad go too far?

By Ian Sager, TODAY

Super Bowl ads are no stranger to controversy, but Volkswagen's newly released commercial is already raising eyebrows.

In it, "Dave" – a white man from Minnesota – speaks in a fake Jamaican accent as he implores his co-workers to "get happy" and overcome "the Mondays." Eventually, office life brightens and Dave takes his boss and some co-workers for a spin in his Beetle. Each speaks with a Jamaican accent as the commercial ends.

I'm with Matt. I had the same feeling when watching the VW ad. Interestingly, I heard from people from Minn. that were offended, but no one Jamaican.

People need to relax a little, I found this no way offensive. Using a man's voice who is clearly happy to portray some of the mundane activities we all face on a daily basis that grow weary on us. The voice is of a Reggae singer, a style of music that is very upbeat and light-hearted.

Believe or not its not offensive I was born and raised in the islands and it is actually a real big deal growing as a island man to own a vw bug(the older ones (63-72) so what that lady said on the show this morning is so false its ridiculous. Yes its German and we (island people are not) but we are actually really connected to the vw bug. I am 29 yrs old and still its a dream of mine to own a Manx bug or vw bug lol. I all the vw bug is a huge part of our culture.

Not sure how this made "news"..but it just promotes it that much more. Only white people would get offended by this. (Yes, please take offense to that if you must.)

Simply ridiculous that this ad would be considered racial, they may have used a Jamaican accent, which I thought was very funny with those obviously very white man from Minnesota, that is what made it funny. But it ended with a song that couldn't be more white, aka The Partridge Family. We have way too many things to worry about than making something out of nothing here, if you want to find something bad you can find it in anything if you try hard enough.

I'm white, and my husband is black. We both watched the commercial and laughed out loud. We both liked it.

I think people should STOP being so politically correct and always looking for a reason to be offended. Maybe they should take a ride in a VW and "don't worry, be happy"!

I was totally offended by this commercial. Talk about 2013 Black-Face, Al Jolson humor... why not just put a wig with dreadlocks on the white boy from Minnesota? If you wanted to celebrate a culture that turns adversity and unhappiness around, why not use a Black man or better yet a West Indian or if you were pointing at Jamaica, use a Jamaican actor to play his own people? How about following it up with a Black guy with an Irish Brogue?

I think using a black person would have made it racist (that's just me) sorry.

Those who oppose this commercial or who think it's offensive are just as ignorant as the claims they make about this commercial. As a BLACK man I find this commercial HILARIOUS. The saying goes, "the best form of flattery is mockery"! More importantly, this is NOT a black/white issue, it's a cultural (language/accent) issue. I guess I would be considered racist if I speak in my British accent? GENIUS idea by Volkswagen! Another great marketing hit to follow the "Little Darth" ad! People really need to get off of the "I'm offended" bus!

Having visited Jamaica many times, I will say that this is very refreshing. Jamaicans love their culture and always encourage others to "don't worry, be happy" in their "accent". By the way, who was the idiot consultant that called this a "black accent". Get real! I don't often agree with Matt, but he got it right this time.

I LOVE IT! I love the islands and i do always feel happy when i am in the islands. I so get it. Maybe we should look at it like this...perhaps its making fun of white people for being so uptight... Take it for what it is people, a funny ad.

I think the commercial is great. It makes me think of my neighbors in Jamaica who were white, asian, and indian. Jamaica is made up of more than black people. But more than anything else, Jamaica is made up of happy people. Irie!

Everyone needs a little "happy" in their Monday. Thoughts of Jamaica & a VW bug make people "happy" & what's wrong with that?! Totally agree with Matt. Now, lighten up everyone & get "HAPPY"! It will make your world & the world a BETTER place!!!!! :)

The ad is a great mix of nostalgia and happy. If you are old enough to remember the Coke ads of Come on get happy which always left me with a smile, this ad does the same. It is not at all derogatory of the wonderful Jamaican people, just a play on their accent. There is nothing I have not seen my Jamaican friends do to have fun with some of their best Ya Man lines! That ad lady needs to go to Jamaica (wo)MAN!

We as a society need to get over all this political correctness baloney. When did we become so sensitive that we can't celebrate the best of another's culture? Are we supposed to be mindless unfeeling robots that all think the same? That so-called media expert they had on was silly. She's a victim of political correctness. That's not who we really are. We are not mindless sheep.

Super Bowl viewers expect creative and quirky commercials during the SuperBowl...PC police like Ms. Lippert just don't get it. Lighten up and be happy, just like the "racist" commercial suggests.

I find the term "black accent" used by the lady from Media Post offensive. What is a black accent? In the West Indies we have many races and we all have the same accent. (and by the way each island has a different accent, this one is Jamaican)

Every West Indian I know loves this ad!!!

I agree Jan. Ms. Lippert's comment was the most racist part of the whole thing. It's not a black accent but Jamaican. It's not about blacks always being happy. It's about the Jamaican culture embracing the best of life.
