Monopoly is sending a game piece to jail, permanently

Monopoly is sending one of its tokens directly to jail forever  without passing go, without collecting $200.

The iconic board game is asking its Facebook fans to vote for their favorite game piece, including the car, thimble, boot, Scottie dog, battleship, hat, iron and wheelbarrow.

The one that receives the fewest votes will be voted off the board next month.

It seems everyone has a personal connection to Monopoly’s signature game pieces. Savannah gushed on the show Thursday morning, urging viewers to cast their votes and revealing her loyalty to the thimble – but then admitted that she also likes the iron (a token likely to get voted off, according to our tally).

Joining in on the nostalgia was Natalie, who said that she and her sister used to fight over who would be the Scottie dog as children.

Hasbro is asking their Monopoly Facebook fans to vote for a new token.

As of Jan. 9, the dog and the car have garnered the most support. Fans of the wheelbarrow and hat may need to select a new game piece.

But out with the old and in with the new: Monopoly will replace the shunned piece with a cat, diamond ring, guitar, helicopter or toy robot.

This isn’t the first time Monopoly has introduced replacement tokens. According to Hasbro.com, the lantern, purse and rocking horse got the ax in the early 1950s, making way for the dog, wheelbarrow and the horse and rider (the horse eventually got booted from the box, too).

Hasbro's promotion hearkens back to M&M’s marketing stunt in 1995, when the the tan-hued chocolate candy was nixed and fans were asked to vote for a new color (the verdict was blue).

Hasbro will reveal the new token exclusively on TODAY on Feb. 6. Be sure to watch!

I can't believe the dog is that high. That one never gets used when we have less than 6 playing.

I hate the dog, love the thimble! (This is why they just need to keep them all--everything is somebody's favorite.)

When was the last time anyone ironed something? Really?

I own a concrete company, the next on my list would be the wheelbarrow, because it has been years since I have seen anyone but my sons who know how to push one.

What's so wrong with the way it is now? Why can't they just leave it alone?

Carolyn: I agree, nothing is wrong with the game. But I'll bet sales are down, so the marketing dept needs some kind of gimmick to induce more sales of the game.

Monopoly has been around for quite some time, so there is a pretty good market saturation. I'm sure most households already have a copy sitting on a shelf somewhere. So, the only way to get people to buy another copy of the game is to change something. They have more than burned out the million and one themed variations, so now they are going back to an old tactic, switch up the game pieces.

john-737278, I ironed my daughter's denim skirt just the day before yesterday. I also iron my skirts and my husband's uniform shirt. Irons are still a necessity if you want to look decent...but it would still be the one I'd vote out of the game, followed by the thimble. I would want to add either the cat or the guitar.

Iron? I don't even remember the iron. Of course there were 5 of us, so it must have been deemed offensive by one of my brothers and immediately destroyed.

      #1.11 - Sun Jan 13, 2013 7:06 AM EST

Get rid of; Thimble, Iron, Battleship and Wheelbarrow...Add; Robot, Ring, Cat and Helicopter.

        BRILLIANT MARKETING HASBRO!

Change a simple game piece, get a ton of free press coverage. Not to mention all the people that will buy the new game just to get the new piece.

I like the ring for a new piece. Or the cat to go with the dog. The battleship always seemed out of place.

I voted to lose the battleship and for the cat. I really like the iron but I'm afraid that's the one that'll be getting the boot. :(

If you ditch the battleship for the cat you'll have the cat and dog fighting ALL through the game. Talk about WAR!

I agree, sink the battleship. It's way too disproportionate. It doesn't fit with the others. In with the cat. It balances the history of the board game. And, there are a lot of cat people.

A battleship is out of place, but a lone shoe isn't? Should of had a shoe and a high heel. One for the boys and one for the girls! hahaha I wish they would keep all the old ones and just add all the new ones.

Wish they'd also let you vote for least favorite... that would be the wheelbarrow here, not just for the representation, but it always seemed most awkward to hold. The iron is OK, and I liked all the others.

That's because everyone has their own version of the rules, which causes arguments. Each person will want to quit if they can't play the way they always played the game.

We played all the time with our neighbors, because we used our own version of the rules. We place all fines that are payed out, under Free Parking. So when someone lands on it, they get paid. There are many people who won't play if you tell them that's the rule. We also allowed cutting the rate of rent on some players in a collaborative Quid Pro Quo. I have seen people ready to fight because of that, which put a damper on the game as adults.

I guess it does take about 15 minutes before people get ticked off about the rules!!!

I think they should just sell the new piece separately to add to your existing game. But you know they won't.

I've never been a fan of the boot. But it looks like the domestic icons are going. I voted for the helicopter.

Ransom- my brothers and I would do stuff like that too. Mainly because my brothers would destroy their game pieces when they lost and we had no choice. Just like playing Risk always ended in a global earthquake.
