Who we trust least: Car dealers, members of Congress

EPA file

Would you buy a used fiscal cliff from these people? Americans give Congress low marks for honesty and ethical standards.

Would you buy a used car from a member of Congress?

The answer, sadly, is probably not.

A new Gallup poll finds that only 10 percent of Americans rank the honesty and ethical standards of members of Congress as high or very high, while 54 percent give Congress low or very low marks for honesty and ethics.

That puts those elected officials right down there with car dealers: Only 8 percent of those polled gave car salespeople high marks for honest and ethical standards in the poll released Monday.

For Congress, there is a silver lining: They actually did better than last year, when only 7 percent of those polled gave them high marks for honest and ethics.

Still, both industries could apparently learn from the medical profession, and not just about how to properly give the Heimlich maneuver.

Nurses topped the Gallup list, with 85 percent of those polled giving nurses high marks for honesty and ethics.  Pharmacists and doctors also got high praise in this area.

The Gallup poll of 1,015 U.S. adults, which was conducted in late November, had a sampling error of plus or minus four percentage points. Respondents were asked to rank the honesty and ethical standards of people in 22 professions as anywhere from very high to very low.

Of course, politicians and used car dealers have been thrown together in a negative light for decades. In the 1970s, National Lampoon famously asked readers of Richard Nixon, "Would you buy a used war from this man?"

Other elected officials fared slightly better than members of Congress in the Gallup poll released Monday. Fourteen percent said members of the Senate had high or very high levels of honesty and ethics, while 45 percent said those elected officials' honesty and ethical standards were low or very low.

Twenty percent said state governors had high or very high standards for honesty and ethics.

Journalists did slightly better than that, with 24 percent giving the fourth estate high marks for honesty and ethics.

How does your profession rank? Check out the full list here.

Explains alot. Think America needs to focus on accountability in office and I'm going to guess that alot of problems just start to be resolved on their own. But how can we find that accountability? Certainly do not expect the fox that is gaurding the hen house to come up with the way, takes we the people. Maybe taking the money out of politics will do it. Rome (not they they are the best benchmarked) gave its senators the benefit of never paying taxes again. America, we give them the right to insider trading, bribes also known as political contributions, and the like. When PIPA and SOPA came up, the exec from hollywood had it right, he paid politicians to get them to think one way and they didn't deliver, should he not get his money back? (Satirical)

Due to the fact that most already know that a used Car saleperson or if female any care salesperson is not quite honest, I persnally would place Congress as the last I can trust.

As the DEms sit on thier hands waiting for the GOP to do anything positive over that of keeping personal promises to a handful not to raise their taxes in exchange for finanical support and votes, I cannot rtrust Congress to work efficiently, professionally and adequately for the people they represent.

In fact I feel that Congress is at its worst then it has ever been and Boehner is ineffective and needs to step down with his drink in hand! He is nothing more than a pion for a few corps; while illustrating a pathetically selfish example of a Leader of Our House of Representatives. He is PUTZ with a drink in hand!

The BS election ads help seal the fate of the Corporate puppets. Sleaze does not belong in politics, Yet it appears to be a birthplace for organized crime wannabes and psychopaths. It's amazing how many politicians score high in the Psychopathy Checklist

Isn't it interesting the trust factor isn't there with regards to used car salespeople and congress people. Yet all the while when Gabby Giffords was shot she was pedestalized as this epoch hero, loved the world over. And the exception for her was made how? People don't trust her because she was a politician yet loved her for the same reason- makes soo much sense!

Here's the thing. We need to hold them more accountable. When they pull the old say one thing then do something else, You fire them. And I don't mean wait until the next election. That is what Recall's are for and we should use it when we find the people we elect do not do what they said they would do. But someone else said it right, we will never be WE THE PEOPLE again until we take the money out of politics. We need to do a signature drive to to force congress to do take the money out of the elections. Stop them from taking bribes, Stop lobbing all together. We should also cut the pay of Congress, Make them pay part of there health Insurance and they shouldn't have any retirement. They shouldn't be there that long anyway. This was never meant to be a full time job. You get these people in there Like McCain and others like him and they will never leave. Term limits and cutting the money out, will give us our country back again. But we will get a fight from Koch & friends.

It needs to be accountability in the laws of this country that single out groups of people and make their lives miserable.

There is no recourse for these groups who are targeted.|

I can name 50 laws alone that target African American and Mexicans in this country which leads to incarceration by the court system that is tampered by the seeking of dollar figures.

It's going to eventually lead to the retaliation on these entities that seek to cause harm to groups of people in this country as well as everywhere else.

We have no recourse from the BULLYING OF THIS GOVERNMENT AND THOSE INSIDE IT THAT THINK THAT THEY CAN GET AWAY WITH IT.
therefore MANY, MANY people are now seeking to take matters into their own hands.

If this government fails to do things correctly then WE DON'T want any part of it or this country.

FIRST THEY NEED TO RELEASE ALL WHO ARE IN JAIL WHO ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE BECAUSE OF THE BIAS LAWS.

No longer are we afraid of those entities nor the fact that we can face death for retaliation....

When it comes to life and death you are either doing one or the other and reincarnation is a fact not fiction so do not be afraid of death.

If you aren't awake then you are asleep.
If you are not sleep then you are awake.

It is a constant back and forth action that continues forever just like day and night.

You can't kill what is already dead.
Once my people understand this they will no longer FEAR.....

Get things right people and do things to make this world a better place to live in so that when you live again it will be better than before.....

How DARE we insult used car salesman (with the plaid pants) by comparing to our representatives in Congress. Used car salesman are not ALWAYS lying. Sometimes the weather IS nice and the car IS shiny.

How do you know if a representative from Congress is lying? If their mouth is moving.

We have the most corrupt government representatives and the sad part is that it is OUR fault. And this is a bi-partisan comment. BOTH PARTIES are corrupt and lying cheats!!

Many don't actually research those running for office. Many just vote "party lines" and don't force the representatives to answer questions. Many vote simply by name recognition. Pathetic.

And what do we get in exchange? Crony Capitalism, Special Interest, Logrolling, and Pork-Barrel Legislation. We allow people to be reelected numerous times to where some in Congress have NEVER even worked in the private sector!! We have legislators who are in Congress 30, 40, or even 50 years in office. Then pay them pensions even for those who work only a couple years and get voted out.

      The solution has four points:

      1) Term limits. Congress should be a "tour of duty" or "patriotic" so we should only allow someone to be in office, say, 12 years. Then that is it. Go back to the private sector. 12 years would be either 6 terms in the House or 2 terms in the Senate.

      2) Terms should be part-time. Our founding fathers did it so why can't they now? Our founding fathers had businesses and farms. You work in the PRIVATE sector for several months then make a trip to D.C. and take care of business over 3 or 4 weeks THEN go back HOME!! Then 3 months later do it again.

      3) Since terms are part-time so should the pay. Reduce the pay to a third of current pay. Afterall, you are only now going to work about 4 months total the entire year anyway. You work 1 month four times a year - so your pay is similar.

      4) No pensions!! Why? You are serving your country and getting paid a decent amount for just 4 months of work. We cannot afford "lifetime" pensions for those who work in Congress. Don't like it? Then don't run for office.

We have an incredibly corrupt system. Have you ever asked yourself HOW so many Congressmen/women are millionaires? How do you become a millionaire when you are elected at the age of 24 and work 50 years in Congress? How are you able to make MILLIONS of dollars working "for the people"? Only one way - corrupt "dealings". Get rid of the incentive to screw the people and you remove the corruptness.

Instead of Welfare checks give people back land so they can farm and take care of themselves.
We have the technology to provide energy by giving homes windmills and solar panels that cost 25 cents in china to make.

Those on welfare don't want any handouts.
the concepts based around money in this world to me, are irrelevant.
People have been dependent on living off of the land for far longer than the way we have been living in this society.

After seeing the hurt, the pain and the grievances that money causes makes me think that things are the way they are so that people can help build the empires around the world.

      I'm OLD, OLD, SCHOOL!!!!!

Gain knowledge in order to advance societies but allow for conditions that allow for people to continue taking care of themselves and there families by living off of the land.
If Socrates could come up with the things that he did then so can the people of today based on a similar lifestyle.

Look at the Amish they are fairing well.
I'm not discounting money but, I am pushing real education that people can use and share with each other.

A car dealer can affect you until you unload the tripe they sold you when they lied that it belonged to a white haired old lady who only drove it on Sunday's, when it actually belonged to the Mayor's son who dogged it out, then traded it before the engine blew, which happened a month after you bought it. You also lost your equity when had to give it away, which will cost you when trying to buy a replacement vehicle.

Almost half a lifetime of grief. Sleazy lying thieves, are sleazy lying thieves, no matter what their profession.

        2little2late-7381371

People say that every year and it never happens. The problem is not personal as much as it is systemic. The political culture is Washington makes it nearly impossible to do exactly that. They control the laws, the media coverage, and the money (or at least the money that is concerned with politics) which would take an incredible uprising to overcome. Congress is ok with dissatisfied as it is easily managed and actually gives them political fodder to polarize and energize bases. Take a look at these posts and posts on other political boards. Ninety percent are regurgitated talking points blaming the "other" party, whether it be Democrats or Republicans, for being incompetent and unethical. Most of the American public has been duped into the same partisanship that has crippled Washington and ensures many re-elections of current members. Gross stuff.

If a large number of voters took the time to look beyond their TV commercials and the posturing and elect only based on performance we would get better government. The biggest flaw in the system is that one must be (by definition) an egomaniac to run for the office of Senator or Representative. What a surprise that all of them feel above the law and have a God complex.

We would be better off choosing them randomly from the voter registration roles, with the only disqualifier being any state or federal felony conviction.

Sure we would get a few liars, perverts, feeble-minded seniles, drunks/dopeheads, racists, and spouse beaters - but what do we have now? Occasionally there would even be an egomaniac. But overall there would be a good cross-section (and a much smaller percentage of lawyers.) The safety valve would be TERM LIMITS - Representatives serve 4 years, with 1/4 replaced each year - Senators serve 6 years, with 1/6 replaced each year. We would have a representative government without all the campaign finance skullduggery, or beauty pageants/popularity contests.

NEITHER party is trustworthy! They both lie, they both take advantage of the system, and they both don't care what happens to the people. So until people start understanding that you can't trust either party, nothing will change. We the people need to take control of our fates because Congress isn't doing anything for us!

Patriot no one cares if you Trust the President. We do and we Re elected him because we did and do. We call that majority rule. That is what this country was founded on. You guys are always pulling out your Constitution. Yet when it goes against what your want, then it don't matter so much. You can't pick and chose the parts you want from the Constitution, You have to take it all, good and bad.

They do say that scum rise to the top - I guess that it how the President rose above congress. He wants to balance the budget and blames the GOP, but has increased spending to the point that you may as well tax the 53% until they do not exist anymore. Why don't we all quit our jobs and receive the "free money" from the Pres?

common sense your dumb as a box of rocks. The Reps were the ones that put us in this mess in the first place. Bush started 2 wars he didn't pay for. He gave huge tax cuts that weren't paid for. He gave to surplus Clinton left him to his Rich Friends. The Rep congress spent money like drunken sailors. " John McCain" and now you same Reps complain that the President wont cut SS, Medicare and Medicaid. But won't let him cut Defense spending. Because defense money goes to the rich. Big surprise there.

Clearly, the system is broken when we tolerate career politicians. Once in office, they fail to accomplish anything except fatten their retirement accounts and live lavish lifestyles funded by the peons that put them into office. They have all figured out that they can pass ridiculous laws that they apply to the masses while exempting themselves! Insider trading while in a political seat - no problem! Any possibility of reform is conveniently prevented by those in power. Each day we slip further and further from democracy and closer to socialism - like watching a train wreck. This is anything BUT a party issue. Corruption is plentiful in all arenas! However, just reviewing the past four years, the arrogance of this administration has reached an all time low! Think Pelosi, Reid, Frank, Obama, Rice - when have we seen so many key players stand before the American public and lie knowing there is no recourse!

kathy... you say once in office they fail to accomplish anything .... this may be true but that is what elections are all about. Unfortunately, the average voter does not reason very well, they do not find out the facts for themselves and have no idea of the consequences of the proposals made by the people who are running for office.

Some people want term limits this would be disastrous, with term limits you would see them do things, the things that they want done not the things you want done. The only thing that keeps them somewhat in check is that they wand to get re-elected and have to watch out how far they go.

If members of congress ran their household budget like they run the goverenment budget they would have been broke years ago. They keep on incurring huge deficits year after year because they do not want to deliver bad news to the electorate and not get re-elected. So they are really serving their interests and not ours. That is why govrenment officials should be elected to one term so that they do the right thing and don't worry about getting re-elected.

I do not parrot anything or everything I read or hear, I am my own person and do not follow a party-line, unlike some here. Want to hear more, let me know.

skyparrot we do agree on one issue I believe in helping those who help themselves, the old a hand up instead of a slap down, unfortunately it no longer works that way. People who work for the government, the ones who dole out the money to the people on welfare, food stamps etc. have figured out that the more people on these programs the more job security they have.

They do very little to give these people a hand up as you put it. They know that if they keep people on the dole their jobs are more secure and perhaps the relatives can get government jobs as well.

presidetn obama and his administration does very little to help people get off of welfare, just the opposite that is where his votes come from give out more money to the people and get more votes in return.

Have to say I agree. Actually can't believe they have a rating at all. The WHOLE group are a bunch of lying cheating stealing self centered, out of touch, good for nothings. Until we get the money out of DC, institute terms limits, have more than 2 parties to choose from (legitimately and make them do national debates on the same stage), rein in the lobbyists, and hold all the members to the same standards and laws they enact and expect the rest of America to follow (includes same or actually worse punishments for when they break them) then don't expect any change. At least with the car salesmen you have something of chance to see if he is ripping you off in you get to see the car first and have some recourse, with congress, 99% of the time, nope, just bend over and take it, especially the middle class.

You are right that the socialist engine cripples nations...we need to stop all of the handouts to banks, financial firms, the defense industry, hospitals, health insurance companies, and the Fortune 500...

Medicare and Social Security are paid for through taxes (at least the gov takes the taxes, they have a problem with using them for the intended purpose). All those socialist handouts - they come from borrowing.

Absolutely stop corporate welfare. It prevents resources from finding their most effective use.

I'm all for Medicare and SS since are directed to Consumers, not Capitalists. They exist in the same system but they are not the same thing. The problems come when consumers think they're capitalists and get crushed.

I guess the writer of this article nor the people who conducted the poll understands that the congress is made up of both the House of Representatives and the Senate therefore both Representatives and Senators are members of Congress.

To ask onequestion about congress and then to ask a question about the Senateas if they are separate and distinct is a little confusing to those who have actually read the Constitution of the United States of America.

The other significant fact that goes completely by everyone is that every penny spent by the Administration has to be (per the Constitution) appropriated by Congress. Boehner and all the TP-ers keep bitching about Obama's spending as if they were not complicit in it.

Your point is valid only so much as to say that Obama is corrupt. He is. So are the people in the GOP. Dems give money / favor to unions and banks. GOP's give favor to defense industry / insurance companies / industrialists and banks.

Our problem is not Obama, it is a financial system run amok. The fact is that our nation can (for now) get money through borrowing anytime it wants. This state of affairs has made the production of anything pointless and empowered financiers and those that already have great wealth to the point where they control the government, the market and the landscape.

Just look at the laws passed under both Obama and Bush. Bush tax cuts = a program of money borrowing. Obamacare = a program of taxation. Bush wars = money borrowing. Obama's wars (by now you have to call them his) = more money borrowing. Stimulus = money borrowing.

The entire idea of a government is that they can make laws and enforce them. How many laws have you seen this government make in the last forty years that don't involve levying another tax, or, ultimately, borrowing more money? Dem or GOP it doesn't matter. The idea of there being two parties is nothing more than theater.

Our government exists to borrow money and tax all but the most influential and powerful.
