Oprah considering an organic food brand

Frank Gunn / AP

Oprah Winfrey's name may be on a laundry list of foods including salad dressings, sauces, soups, dips, frozen vegetables and beverages.

Move over, Paul Newman: Oprah is going organic. According to five trademark applications filed at the end of October with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the media mogul could make the jump from the magazine rack to grocery store shelves.

Applications were filed to trademark the name “Oprah’s Organics” for laundry list of foods including salad dressings, sauces, soups, dips, frozen vegetables and beverages. Another application was for a line of bath and body products including soap, bubble bath, moisturizer, lip balm, hand cream, hair products and other personal-care items.

In addition, an application was filed to use the name for “catering services.” Two other applications filed in September and August, respectively, for Oprah’s Harvest and Oprah’s Farm, also reference “food, beverages, agricultural and catering services.”

Related: Hey Gen X, tell us how you're feeling about the economy

The applicant on the October trademark applications is listed as Oprah’s Farm LLC. In April, Pacific Business News reported that “Oprah’s Farm LLC” was registered as a business with the Hawaii Department of Commerce & Consumer Affairs.

"The trademarks were filed for Oprah's farm on Maui to enable the farm to grow and distribute produce on Maui and throughout the Hawaiian Islands," Oprah spokeswoman Nicole Nichols said via email.

These trademark filings come as Oprah’s TV venture with Discovery Communications, OWN, continues to lose money, although Discovery CFO Andrew Warren said in an investor conference call last week the most recent quarterly losses were noncash, related to higher marketing costs and content write-offs, and that Discovery expects OWN to break even next year.

Given her support for the Obama Administration and lunch and whatever with Barrack, I suspect that Oprah will be selling Obama Condoms! They worked for her!

She is the female Gene Simmons. Just sells a bunch of $hit, all of which, is utter garbage. Maybe if she wasn't the size of Moby D*ck, she could sell some organic foods but when you look like Grimis, she should be focusing her food ventures on slanging hamburgers and hot dogs.

Organic is a righty fad, the food is no better or worse than normal food...I wouldn't buy anything endorsed by that fat a$$3d blabbermouth....what a huge waste of good skin...

I wouldn't expect any moron with the coyotehunter label to know anything about organic foods. You know about as much as oprah does about organic foods, a big fat nothing. While on the subject, oprah is a big fat nothing.

Yeah.. lets get back to organic foods..This holiday season,I am giving organic culinary gifts. I am making organic spice mixes and pairing them with this really funny beginners cookbook I found. I can't tell you the name of it cause some of you will freak out at me, but if you google "Whipped and beaten culinary works" you can find it.. but seriously.. don't go if you get upset easily or cant take a good joke..

The whole organic food movement was to get all of those poisons and pesticides out of the food we buy. But our government soon moved in allowing almost anything to be called organic (I'm surprised if they don't use Agent Orange in orange juice and call it organic) and the term organic is now almost worthless. The corporate food producers had a big hand in this to ensure their dominance in the food market. Truthfully, most farmers are mostly debt-slaves to the large corporations who are out to take down whatever small independent farmers are left. Now back to Oprah, she should stay where she fits in, TV, entertainment and such. I would not trust another billionaire and their product on the market.

Oprah, TAX DODGER

1) This "enterprise" is so Oprah can deduct that Mansion she built in Hawaii as a BUSINESS EXPENSE. I am certain Queen B will do the same in CA for that overdone Mansion in Santa Barbara.

WHY?

a) If you want organic in Hawaii you already have it.

b) Shipping "organic" out of State is against the ethics Organic since items need to be locally made (Carbon Footprint) Organic cant have the preservatives and pesticides required to ship said good out of State or Country.

c) Organic Goods from out of State have to be treated with topical pesticides (to stop insects from invading another State) and have topical wax or preservatives or else they would rot. Sure they are planted and grown without pesticides (although Central and South American Soil has so much soil pollution from Acid Rain that the difference between US Crops grown with all of the pesticides are normally less than the "organic" (Your only solution, buy from a local Organic Farm only, and even then you have to insure the soil is virgin and you have no groundwater seepage.)

ie: If you want the cleanest Vegetables and Fruit and you cant grow it: Buy from the local farmers market or the Store, however buy the vegetable complete v. cut and ready to serve, Rinse and clean vegetables and fruit when you get home and put it in new containers, and then sanitize your sink. (Organic wolnt be any cleaner and might not be as fresh and worm, bug, pest free as non-organic)

SO WHAT IS THIS?

Oprah deducts the cost and maintenance of her huge Plantation in Hawaii and depreciates its cost.

Its a TAX DODGE

The rich SOB Celebs do this all the time ... Do you really think Obamas plan will tax the rich LOL ... really ... LMAO.

As for OWN making money LOL ... Not a chance. Oprah is possibly the most hated woman in the USA right now. Even MO called her FAT. I think Casey Anthony is more liked and OWN is all about the rejects of other places, Rosie O Donnell, Kirstie Alley and the ilk. .. its OWN or the glue factory for her shows/programs.

The ultra rich dodged a bullett since Mitt Romney wanted them to quit tax dodging with bull @!$%# deductions like this and pay taxes on their real income.

As for Oprah, SHE made her viewers live their "best life" by SPENDING LAVISHLY on a BS extravagant lifestyle .. you have to have an interior designer, you have to have Jimmy Choo's, you have to have a huge carbon footprint home, you have to wear mink eyelashes, you you have have have to have ... well all of that you have to led to Foreclosures, Divorces, The Banking Meltdown, etc. All while she promotes getting sex changes (now paid for SF Residents by CA Taxpayers (geeze, cut your weenie off yourself) while Seniors and the Disabled benefits are cut) and how great shacking up is (except when Joe babymaker leaves her and she is dumped on taxpayers to pay for said kid and she in reality, even with all kinds of help, lives in poverty with the poor kid.

Frankly Oprah I dont care if you live or die, just dont fart in my path anymore and dont promote your BS as good because you have left a path of foreclosures, divorces, misery, poverty, and suffering in the wake of your fat butt lies.

Haven't heard if she has done anything for the folks suffering from Sandy as yet.

I agree with you sueca...I hope that when/if she actually does this she will emphasize that the products available will be affordable for all to partake of and will follow up with doing just that. She'd probably make more money herself that way and certainly be more well received. Other celebrities on those sellivision channels or whatever they are called hawk all kinds of junk and food items at ridiculously exhorbitant prices (plus shipping).

      #1.16 - Tue Nov 13, 2012 2:32 AM EST

fenderblues: "the oprah would make more money thing" is a bit of a quote taken out of context. I simply meant, and it was my point that it would be nice if she persues this avenue that the products be afforadable to all. The money she made, if any, would be hers to do whatever she wanted with whether that be... to keep it or donate it all to charity. In that Paul Newman's product profits were all given to charity as you stated is admirable, but doesn't have anything to do with Oprah Winfrey's future ideas as to whatever she decides to do with the money hasn't been mentioned. I was merely referencing affordability and public receptivity. Nothing more.

Quit with the moronic, brainwashed assumption that if one doesn't care for a particular person who happens to be black then he/she is racist. I am not tea party, but I am tired of the haters. I do not care for Oprah and her skin color is not an issue. She could be whiter than snow and I still would warn people to stop the idol worship. She actually has lots of people so brainwashed (just like her choice for president.) I cannot stand him. His being half black is irrelevant. You call people racist and haters. The funny thing is there are plenty of black folk in the Tea Party. Back off.

I agree that all television host pesronalities, news anchors, reality show characters make way too much money but that is the cost of entertainment.

With this said, you can not take away from Oprah's journalistic genius. She made her way into the lives of many of our homes by discussing substantive issues, that matter to most Americans. This is in contrast to people like Howard Stern, Jerry Springer, and all these crazy reality shows, who not only make too much money but also have contributed to making the population less intellectually sound and morally reckless.

I will give her a dime of my money ~ when she spends "her own" money instead of getting donations from everyone else, like she did with her 'angel network.' Get the title people ~ angel "NETWORK" ~ all those gifts and whatevers were DONATED by others, she never spent a dime of her own money. Just ask anyone who lives in Chicago and went to the taping of one of her shows; you saw the real Oprah there.

Where was Oprah's money when California tried to pass Prop 37 just a couple of weeks ago ????? (Prop 37 was to LABEL GMO or genetically modified foods in the state of California.)

The biggest contributor for Prop 37 and labeling of GMOs was Dr. Mercola MD, from Illinois, not Oprah. She was NO WHERE on the list of supporters...Guess that wouldn't be politically correct for her to get involved with that? Might get big scary Mr. Mean Monsanto mad at you, huh, Oprah?

This is how the Global Elite will start to under populate America.

The truth is that while you and I may not give much thought to "overpopulation", the global elite are truly obsessed with it.

In fact, they even hold gatherings where they all get together and talk about it. Just over one year ago Bill Gates, David Rockefeller, Warren Buffett, George Soros, Michael Bloomberg, Ted Turner, Oprah Winfrey and a number of other incredibly wealthy individuals held a secret meeting in New York.

So what was the topic of this secret meeting?

                Population control.

Look for the Obama administration to wage even more wars against raw milk freedom, farm freedom and food freedom, all while requiring yet more foods to be pasteurized or fumigated under the guise of "food safety."

Hell, Oprah must eat 12-15 peoples worth of meals at a sitting. Who's crowding who?

Population "control" has been well underway since GMOs were silently introduced in America with the blessing of the FDA starting in 1994.

"Continuing a 12-year decline, the U.S. birth rate has dropped to the lowest level since national data have been available, according to statistics just released by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC)."

"After feeding hamsters for two years over three generations, those on the GM diet, and especially the group on the maximum GM soy diet, showed devastating results. By the third generation, most GM soy-fed hamsters lost the ability to have babies. They also suffered slower growth, and a high mortality rate among the pups."

The list is growing of GMO foods. Canola, soy, corn, sugar beets are the big ones and are found now in EVERYTHING you are eating...

Don't feel good? Stomach problems, chronic fatigue, mysterious cystitis, joint pain, allergies, Alzheimer cases growing yearly, ADHD, cancer? The list is long of these "mysterious" illnesses that you just have to live with. Not only that, but these GMO foods are hurting your pets too.

Here's partly what is happening. They introduced GMOs, then people like Oprah get to cash in on Monsanto's GMO mischief-making by scaring everyone into now having to buy organic to avoid GMO foods. How kind of her to offer...

So much negativity! It can be very difficult to lose weight, but I think focusing on healthy foods will influence everyone. I didn't vote for Obama either and am concerned about higher taxes as well. I also wanted Prop 37 to pass to we would at least know what foods have GMOs in them. I think the rule should be expanded for all Organic foods to be non-GMO, which it now isnt. But as for Oprah getting into organic foods, I think it is a good thing.

Really? Shouldn't she try to fix her struggling network first? Also, many, many, research studies have shown that organic isn't any better then regularly grown food. Just more expensive. Ahhh, that's why she's doing it--more money for her.

Oprah should sit down, shut up, get her big fat token black a** out of the way and give somebody younger a chance at the great propaganda celebrity money machine.

Wow! Didn't know Oprah has drawn such acrimony to herself. In any case, kudos to any and all who support Food Industry Reform. Moving forward, we'll all learn how much what is pushed on us as food is harmful to us. If Oprah means well, her new product line will be informative, affordable and nutritious. Better Health to us all in the future.

Shame on you Oprah. You are clearly going in to this for the money and I for one, will not be buying anything with your name on it.

Do you go into business to lose money? LOL Isn't this the democratic way of business? I'll be scrutinizing her label and if the NON-GMO project label is on it, it will have been tested as pesticide and gmo free. If it's the right price, I'll buy it for sure. Why not?
