October surprise: Americans feeling better about economy

Jonathan Ernst / Reuters

Two-year-old Charles Kearley helps his parents shop for pumpkins at Stribling Orchard in Markham, Va. Consumers have been feeling better about the economy in recent weeks.

With only days to go before the presidential election, a remarkable thing has happened: Americans have stopped feeling quite so crummy about the economy in general, and their personal financial situation in particular.

It’s too early to say that people have completely let go of the financial worries brought on by the Great Recession and weak recovery. Still, several data points released this month show that Americans are feeling less negative about their finances and the economy, and a little more willing to spend money.

“People feel we’re out of the woods, but we’re not in the clearing,” said Lydia Saad, a senior editor with Gallup.

The slightly more optimistic feelings come more than three years after the economy officially came out of recession and limped into the current sluggish expansion.

“This is the typical pattern we see at the first stage of the recovery,” said Richard Curtin, chief economist for the Surveys of Consumers, a monthly look at consumer sentiment. “Now, unfortunately, we’re long into this recovery but consumers hadn’t noticed it.”

Curtin said the improving attitudes are being driven by two issues that hit closest to home: Housing and employment.

“It’s the sense that their income is improving and their household wealth is improving, and this better balance sheet has really been one of the major forces,” he said.

A recent Gallup poll showed that for the first time in five years, more Americans are feeling better off financially than they did a year ago, as opposed to worse off.

The shift was largely due to a decline in those feeling worse off, from around 49 percent of people at the beginning of the year to about 34 percent when the latest poll was taken in late October.

The number of people feeling better off rose to 38 percent, from 29 percent in January.

The modest upswing would seem to be a boon for President Barack Obama, since his handling of the economy has been a top election issue. But Saad cautioned that much of the gain is coming from Democrats.

Among Republicans, there was a decline since January in those feeling better off. That may reflect the feelings of those who support challenger Mitt Romney and see a better future under his leadership.

The partisan divide didn’t surprise her.

“Even for something that looks like a very sound economic measure, people understand what the implications are politically,” Saad said. “People, I think, are just more political than we realize.”

The latest consumer sentiment data released Friday by the University of Michigan and Thomson Reuters confirmed that Americans are feeling better than they have felt in five years about their financial prospects. Still, the data showed that many remain worried that either the economy in general or their personal situation will get worse.

Curtin, chief economist for the consumer survey, said more Americans are feeling better about their own situation and also report hearing better news generally about those close-to-home issues. That’s in keeping with a separate poll the Pew Research Center released this month, showing that Americans felt they were hearing less negative news about the economy.

The unemployment rate has been edging down very slowly for a while and dropped below 8 percent last month for the first time since 2009. But many economists said recent signs the housing sector is stabilizing may have been a bigger driver of improved consumer feelings in recent months.

“I really believe it’s tied most intrinsically to housing,” said Diane Swonk, chief economist with Mesirow Financial.

For many Americans, their home is their biggest financial asset, she noted. The housing market crash left many people feeling financially fragile and nervous about the future, if they were able to hang onto their house at all.

Now, she said, people may be more likely to see that a neighbor’s house is for sale and selling for a good price. They may also have been able to take advantage of record-low rates to refinance, leaving them with a bit more money at the end of the month.

“They’re willing to spend a little bit more,” she said.

The painfully slow but relatively steady improvement in the unemployment rate also is fueling some of the more optimistic feelings, said David Sloan, a senior economist with 4Cast in New York.

“I think the people who have jobs are feeling secure, and the numbers of unemployed are gradually declining,” he said.

Sloan said the economy does seem to be showing signs of genuine improvement. Still, he cautioned that other economic factors, which most Americans are less likely to be thinking about, could derail some of those gains.

Businesses have grown increasingly worried that politicians won’t come to an agreement over the so-called fiscal cliff, a series of automated tax increases and spending cuts that are scheduled to take effect if Congress doesn’t act.

Executives also may not like the uncertainty of not knowing who will win next week's elections, since the outcome could mean more political gridlock over important policy issues.

Discussing whether consumers or corporations have a better gauge of the economy, with CNBC's Jon Fortt & Bob Pisani.

The European economic situation also remains somewhat uncertain, and that could have a ripple effect on U.S. businesses.

“The question is, is it sustainable?” Swonk said of the slow economic improvements. “We’re in a pretty fragile situation and it’s only sustainable if those other shocks that people don’t think about don’t … sneak up on us.”

Economic health can be directly correlated with interest rates. A strong economy requires rates be high enough to prevent inflation due to the velocity of money in the economy.

When rates are significantly increased this will signal that the economy is getting back to normal.

Mitch McConnell - "The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president."

You can spin that just about any way you like, until you consider the actions of Congress. They governed on just that goal. It is not like we do not know how to get the economy going. The Republican Congress just refused to do it.

KI Smart Simple,

Remember this?

The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president.
Mitch McConnell Oct, 2010

"Taliban Insurgency, we understand perhaps a little bit more because of the Taliban. Insurgency is the way they went about systematically understanding how to disrupt and change a person's entire processes. And these Taliban -- is an example of how you go about to change a person from their messaging to their operations to their frontline message. And we need to understand that Insurgency may be required when [dealing with] the other side"

"If they [democrats] do not give us those options or opportunities then we will then become Insurgency ... I think Insurgency is a mindset and an attitude that we're going to have to search for and find ways to get our message out and to be prepared to see things for what they are, rather than trying to do something about them"

~Rep Pete Sessions, March 2009, regarding wrecking the US economy to ruin the Obama presidency.

"We've gotta challenge them on every single bill."

"Show united and unyielding opposition to the president’s economic policies." GOP Rep Kevin McCarthy

"You’ll remember this as the day the seeds of 2012 were sown."

Newt Gringrich, after a four hour, "invitation only" meeting with GOP members literally plotted to sabotage and undermine U.S. economy during President Obama's Inauguration on Jan 20, 2009.

Look, this was a Gallup poll, not a statement from the Obama campaign. It's information, not propaganda. The information the poll reveals is that Americans are feeling better about the economy. There are a lot of reasons for this. Republicans will deny them all and point to the remaining problems in an attempt to influence the pathologically stupid. There are problems to be sure, there has never been a time in history that was free of problems. It's just that the problems seem less insurmountable now than they did 4 years ago. If you want to vote for Romney, go ahead, it won't change the fact that more people feel the economy is improving than one year ago. Less than half feel the economy is getting worse; I suspect the majority of them are republicans who would instantly feel better if Romney wins.

But for those people in the REAL world this is a terrible economy with no sign of improvement under the Obama administration. He doesn't even have a plan for the NEXT four years!! When Obama's campaign slogan is "It is STILL about Hope. It is STILL about Change" we know we are in trouble. We have had all the "change" we can handle right now and the only thing we can "hope" for is Romney to get elected and fix this mess the Community Organizer in Chief has caused.

You failed to mention that Democrats controlled both the House and Senate for the first two years of Obama's administration. And even under those conditions, they did NOTHING. Put the blame where it belongs.

This is a failed President. I am sure this story is biased and does represent a lot of American citizens.

He said he would resign if he did not cut the deficit. He is not to be trusted - he knows he failed and yet hopes for another 4 years. For what? Most Americans do not want the dreams of his father realized in American. 2016: Obama's America.

He still has Lybia to answer for. He sat and monitored the death of Americans and did nothing. THEN lied about it for weeks, and I am sure we still do not know the complete truth of it all.

The manufacturing company for which I work has been in business for over 40 years. We are a Pennsylvania manufacturing company. We do not outsource and everything we manufacture is made from American-made steel and American-made components.

The end of 2008 and the beginning of 2009 nearly brought us to our knees. We had, literally, no orders for five months. Since then, however, business began to slowly increase. As of the beginning of September we have hired additional employees in our shop and all of us are working overtime.

The economy is getting better. Because it is not a falsely-manufactured explosion, created by deregulating banks, it is a true growth that will be able to sustain itself. Slow and steady wins the race.

The president of our company, the management, office staff, welders, fabricators, laborers, maintenance and cleaning personnel, in our discussions in the break room, all agree that President Obama is setting the nation back on the correct course.

The only people complaining about President Obama are the extremely wealthy who know that President Obama will force them to pay their fair share of taxes and the brainwashed sheep who follow the preachings of the right-wing media that is controlled by those extremely wealthy people.

President Obama wants the middle class to have the same opportunities as those born with silver spoons in their mouths. To say that the percentage paid by the wealthy should be lower than the percentage paid by the middle class is obscene. To allow the ubber-rich to have loopholes and tax shields so that they do not have to pony up the same percentage as middle-class working American is unjust.

All these folks who say that small business is not behind President Obama are just regurgitating what they hear in the Romney camp and on Faux news. It is just not true.

Then NBC gets their "survey" information from University of Michigan and Thomson Reuters - one of the most far-left universities in the country and a CANADIAN company.

The reason that the Pew Research Center survey cited in the article found that people are HEARING less negative news about the economy is right under your nose. It's because left-wing media WH0RES like NBC are presenting PROPAGANDA instead of the TRUTH.

I say we all need to pay our fair share American peoples taxes are way too low they need to increase to 1970 tax rate with no inflation adjustment.3 /5ths of the country pays on average less than 1-0% federal income taxes the. the nest fifth pays on average 4% and the last fifth pays 7-8% You don't go past an average of 9.9% until you go past 250K of income. so you see we all need to stop being dead beats and pay the piper.

So lets jump off the fiscal cliff Democrats have already proven the Bush tax cuts did nothing so if they expire they will do nothing to hurt the economy.

foolishness abounds: Don't get too upset. All one has to do is pay attention to this site and the rest of DNC sites to know that their only idea of "news" is news they fabricate with phony polls. And then there's the purposeful slant of the polls too. Add to that the nebulous wording of the polls, and you can end up with plenty of room to spin. The good news is that nobody really believes NBC, CBS, ABC, and CNN are actually impartial news agencies. Most are well aware that these are merely PR arms of the DNC. How else can you explain their total failure to investigate Libya and report facts. Obviously, if Obama was a repub, these same PR organizations would be screaming for Impeachment!

As to the question of Americans feeling better about the economy: I think they definitely are. They believe that Obama will be out of office in 3 months and that is good news for anyone to optimistic about. Of course, if Obama wins, then you'll see the optimism fade very fast.

"Whore of Babylon"/"Mystery Babylon" is the United States

When The Revelation Ch 17 & 18 refers to the "whore of Babylon" and "Mystery Babylon", it's referring to the United States. Literally, the ruins of Babylon are 50 miles south of Baghdad, Iraq and they were 'destroyed' by the American & Polish Armies in 2003 (google 'destruction of Babylon'), thus fulfilling prophecy when interpreted literally. Figuratively (and the dictionary's 2nd definition), 'Babylon' is any city that is wicked, immoral, and possesses excess luxury. Many Americans - perhaps most - will do anything for money. Our political leaders, our religious leaders, our lawyers, our media, and certainly our business leaders will very often do immoral and ungodly things for their love of money. They usually have no regrets (unless they've been caught) for their choice of GOLD over GOD - they have accepted the temptation presented to them by the D'evil. The 1% owning 93% of all wealth is the most antiChrist thing I can think of with the exception that these greedy whores of Babylon want even more!

I'm a business owner and I've seen our business materially picking up over the past year. We've recently hired 2 new staff. I know that it's a drop in the bucket, but, it feels good to take them on.

The 2008 Recession was a killer for us. But, we tightened up and made it through. It's clear that our customers have more discretionary money as of late.

Clearly, leading economists are projecting significant growth in the next 3-4 years. GDP projections are in the area of 3% with Europe 1.7-2%. It's clear at this point that the decisions taken by the US governement and the Federal Reserve board have gone a long ways towards keeping the recession from being much worse. It's clear that these decisions were correct. Especially, when you see the European banks beginning to change their approach from fiscal austerity to an approach more similar to what was done in the US.

The big exposure right now is sequestration issue. My hope is once the rabid political boodsport is out of the way cooler heads will prevail there.

Romney hires 17 of 24 of Bush Cheney regime advisers who gaves us the lie nation into Iraq war for war profits. Killing thousands of our troops, wounded thousands more still dying.

Republicons voted against the jobs bill to help get jobs for veterans who are returning from multiple deployments to war, and who are committing suicide at a record pace.

"October surprise: Americans feeling better about economy"

Are you joking? Or is this just a story to make people "think" the economy is getting better just before the election?!?

The economy is NOT getting better, don't believe this article. The company I worked for just announced we will be closing on October 31st, 2012 due to the poor economy and the owner not being able to renew his bank loan. After 12 years in business this is what it has come to, banks have tightened up on lending, due to all the new regulations. The regulations and poor economy has made it very difficult for small business' to operate. There are 48 people at our company that will be on the unemployment line this week . Our office in Hong Kong will also close, 14 people will be out of work there.

THE ECONOMY IS NOT GETTING BETTER!! I am Hoping for a Change in November, because we can no afford 4 more years!! Wake up America, look around you, talk to your friends, neighbors, etc. don't believe what you read, the economy is not getting better.

I am feeling a little better ... laid off all my employees last year. I contracted with a few as 1099 employees ... as 1099 employees I don't have to pay Socail Security Taxes for them or other payroll taxes and I don't have to buy them HealthCare. If work falls off I give them less work, If get more jobs I contract them per job. If Romney is elected the economy will rocket and I will be forced to rehire or risk losing my "employees" to competitors but if Obama is re-elected I am already set for the next 4 years.

Republicans Block FEMA Funds For Disaster Relief

We have mentioned before (here and here) about how Eric Cantor has said he will block relief funds without offsetting cuts. He threatened to do it with funds for relief in Joplin, MO after their devastating F5 tornado, and again with Hurricane Irene. Apparently, the outcry about his positions did nothing to change the Republican mindset, and last night they voted to block a FEMA funding bill, never allowing it to come to a vote. Via Raw Story:

A package of disaster relief funding worth $7 billion was blocked from coming up for a vote by Senate Republicans on Monday, drawing sharp condemnation from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) who lambasted the conservative party for abandoning Americans in need.

“Last night, Democrats tried to move forward on a measure that would have granted the Federal Emergency Management Agency additional funding to help communities devastated by natural disasters,” Sen. Reid said in an advisory.

“This ought to be the least political issue going – whether to reach out a helping hand to our friends and neighbors in their time of need,” he continued. “They have lost friends and loved ones. Their homes, businesses and livelihoods have been destroyed by acts of god. Their communities are under water or reduced to rubble.

The vote was 53-33, with Republicans uniting against measure that would have brought the aid package to a vote and put a rush on some emergency funds. A 60-vote majority was required to pass it.

“They don’t need help next week or next month,” Reid railed. “They need it now. They need it today.”

He added that because of the increased number of natural disasters this year, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has just over $300 million left. President Barack Obama has issued disaster declarations in 48 states since the beginning of 2011.

The funds are so low, Reid said, that FEMA has stopped rebuilding the town of Joplin, Missouri, which was practically destroyed by tornadoes earlier this year. It withdrew funding for the Joplin rebuilding in order to provide food and shelter to the victims of Hurricane Irene.

So – flooding victims aren’t getting the funds, and the people of Joplin are being victimized again, not by an act of God but an act of Senate Republicans. Keep in mind that this wasn’t a vote to deny the funds. It was a vote to deny the funding ever being considered. Maybe they thought that if it didn’t come up for a full vote, they could sweep it under the rug. I have a hunch those folks who have lost homes, businesses – even family members – won’t be so eager to see this swept away without full consideration.

Disaster relief is one of the things that government is best suited for. But as the constant drone from the right tells us, we should have no government. That somehow, these people should be able to fend for themselves when these disasters happen. As Ron Paul said in the CNN/Tea Party Express debate, that’s freedom.

In this case, it’s the freedom to lose everything you own and care about, and not get any help in recovering. I hope the folks in these hard-hit areas remember who pulled the rug out from under them when the 2012 elections roll around.

I am sorry but Obama had his chance...even with his lack of experience he should have made more progress...he hasn't even had a budget for any of his term! How can you justify that? I understand he voted "present" several times as an Illinois congressman...that just shows a lack of backbone and a desire to become president - no voting record means nobody can call you on it.

When will liberals hold Obama accountable for anything. He had the majority for two years and did biff. He's a disgrace and a complete and utter failure. It's going to take all of Romney's acumen to climb out of the hole Obama dug. It wasn't pretty when he took office, but he's made it much worse.

To vote for Obama is to vote for communism, so there is no way I can vote for Obama and the fool Biden, the economy has not improved in the past 4 years it has doubled back things are twice as bad as when Obama took office and if Obama care goes on it will bankrupt the country, and his plans for rebuilding the nation will only destroy it. besides the fact he really has no plan other then wealth redistribution that will cost jobs. making a unprofitable atmosphere will not bring jobs to America, inflating the economy will not pay our bills, forcing expensive insurance backed by high Taxes and fines will not build a strong economy it will destroy it then what will you do. this has been a failed Presidency, just like Carters. maybe Obama should have followed Clintons plan and sold off a bunch of America to balance the budget. I'm sure China would like the rest of the west coast, and Denmark and Dubai, could use some more eastern Turn pikes, who has the harbors now? is China really stepping in to run our utilities and control all the wind power? Watch those Democrats they are selling /leasing everything.

Once again you poor delusional fools pretend that you have a "Vote" when you really have nothing and truly only a fool thinks there is one bit of difference between Obama or Romney.

Wake up America for once again nothing from nothing is still nothing and only the Wall Street Banksters will profit from our loss this year!

As a wise lady said it is better to refuse to encourage them so let this be the lowest election turnout ever!

If you have to vote vote 3rd party for if enough of America votes "No More" then perhaps they will "Take a hint" other wise this will end badly and no amount of your sad "Dreams of Change" will change anything!

The big exposure right now is sequestration issue. My hope is once the rabid political boodsport is out of the way cooler heads will prevail there

We are at mercy of secuestration, my state of Virginia will lose thousand of jobs mostly in Military sector, secuestrarion was Obamas idea.

<<<<<Famed Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward disputed Obama's statement that the idea was birthed by Republicans in Congress.

"What the president said is not correct," Woodward told Politico on Tuesday. "And it's refuted by the people who work for him."

In his book The Price of Politics, the reporter who gained fame from the Watergate scandal outlined that it was White House Office of Management Director Jack Lew and Legislative Affairs Director Rob Nabors who took the sequestration proposal to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. They also presented it to House Republicans.

Initially, no one thought a deal could not be reached to avert hitting the debt ceiling, but when reality started to unfold, the sequestration was the only option left standing. Woodward also writes that the president may not have known the entire story of how the process unfolded.

"It's a complicated process – and in fairness to the president – maybe he didn't know that they were doing this because it's kind of technical budget jargon," Woodward said in his Politico interview. "What I wrote – it's specific date, time, place, participants. What I've reported is totally accurate. Call Nabors and Lew. Or ask the White House. I mean, they know that's accurate.">>>>>>>>

Regardless of who is president, the country will be worse off in 5-10 years than it is now. many economists on both sides are starting to tell the truth now and realize that the Western World is headed for and epic collapse that has never been seen before. Governments will do everthing they can to stay in power as long they can. We will continue to have $1Trillion + a year deficit spending for eternity or until it collapses. Since you can't spend 1Trillion more a year than you take in forever, it will inevitably collapse. This is a horrible situation we are in. Im am no tin hat wearer, I just have common sense and realize that you can not continue to have EVERYONE in debt for ever. It just can't work and will eventually all collpase around us. Good luck everyone, we are in for a different world in the future.

How did I know the comment section was going to be ripe with right wing idiots claiming Mitt is going to save the day. When are idiots going to wake up and realize the president can do very little to create jobs. Sure they can increase the size of the government or military and create jobs that way, but almost all jobs are created by regular people who start and own businesses. Mitt's plan: Tax breaks for the rich + increased military spending = more debt.

Personally, I'd rather he was born somewhere else and not be a die-hard socialist trying to destroy our country.

Then you should be happy with the facts that he was born in Hawaii, and isn't even close to being a socialist. Not every social program is 'socialist', unless you oppose things like police, fire departments, public schools and Medicare - all of which are overwhelmingly popular.

Objectively, his policies are actually right-center - it's just that the Republicans have become so radicalized that everything else is far to left of them.

There was a time when the John Birch Society was a laughingstock for it's paranoid-delusional positions, like opposing the Communist Threat of fluoridation. Now they're mainstream Republicans.

And as we speak Romneys vulture business Bain Capitol which he is still a huge shareholder is dismantling and shipping American jobs from a profitable U.S. company(Sensata) to China. Romney is the most ruthless and despicable type of business man in our country and the right wants him to be our president. I hope all you conservatives are willing to move to China if you still want your job.

On the day before an election that's supposed to hinge on jobs, taxes and the middle class, Bain Capital, the company Mitt Romney founded, will close the doors of a factory in Freeport, Illinois, and ship 170 good, high-tech jobs to China.

The employees of Sensata Technologies were forced to train their Chinese replacements, and the American flag that long flew over the factory was reportedly removed while the Chinese engineers were visiting the site. A group of workers have set up camp across from the factory -- calling it “Bainport” -- and some supporters have tried to block the trucks hauling equipment out of the plant. According to Dave Johnson, there have been several arrests.

Sensata workers have asked to meet with Mitt Romney and hoped to enlist his help keeping their jobs in the United States, but he has refused, instead remaining on the campaign trail where he speaks often about “getting tough” with China.

The most important part of the story is that Sensata Technologies is profitable operating in Illinois. Net income last year was $355 million, up 16 percent from 2010. The company reported total revenues of $1.8 billion in 2011, up almost 19 percent from the year before. According to a company financial statement, “both 2011 net revenue and adjusted net income represent record levels for the company.”

So this has nothing to do with “making hard choices” in the process of turning around a failing business, which is how the Romney campaign describes Bain's corporate raiding. Bain's partners are looking for a modest boost in profits by locating the plant closer to the booming Asian automotive market (Sensata makes high-tech automotive parts). They'll get a small tax break for relocating the plant – the one Mitt Romney insisted did not exist during the first debate – and possibly defer taxes on some of the income the company generates.

4 Americans murdered in Libya, and obama knew what was going on and then lied about it.

Today he changed his mind again...what he was for he wasn't for and what he wasn't for he is for now!

Romney whines there is not enough taxpayer money to fund FEMA......DUH when he avoids paying his fair share of taxes by hiding money offshore, and republicans signed the Norquist pledge not to raise taxes back up on the rich...no wonder we don't have enough money coming in!

Romney wants to pay no taxes by ending his capital gains tax. Again...ROMNEY REFUSES TO PAY HIS FAIR SHARE OF TAXES!

Ryan plans cuts billions from programs including FEMA!

Ref Yahoo news.com 10/29/12

Ryan's House-passed budget proposal suggested $11 billion for "Community and Regional Development," a government function that includes FEMA and disaster relief. President Obama's budget allocation was nearly $19 billion. That's a cut of about 40 percent for 2013 under Ryan's plan, according to the Office of Management and Budget. The disparity would grow to more than 60 percent in future years, according to a study by David Kendall of the non-partisan think tank Third Way.

This is the alledged"October Surprise" that's going to dramatically change the way the elections will go?????? IF libbies think a BS feel good spin story is gonna swing things their way then I have some ocean front property in Arizona they might be interested in.

The BIGGEST surprises in October are that Obama, Biden, Clinton Rice and most of the media actually believe the majority of Americans arent upset by their LIES about Benghazi-gate!!!!

Another big surprises is Obama's complete disrespect to the father of oneof the fallen. Couldn't look this man i n the eye adn be sincere in expressly condolences. NO teleprompter around I guess

Then BITEME BIDEN who definetely needs a damned script in front of his face before he speaks pulls the sickest and biggest bonehead move of the decade with his sick twisted reamrk to that same father. THIS is the man who would be a heartbeatr from the Presidency???? WHO dares to talk to a grieveng father like that? What kind of man, what kind of fricking decent human asks a father who's just lost his son "Did your son always have balls the size of cueballs??????

The surprise is that the media REFUSES to demand answers from these two bozo's.

THE BIGGEST ,BEST AND ONLY SURPRISE I WANT BEFORE OCT. IS OVER IS FOR OBAMA/BIDEN TO COME CLEAN ABOUT THIS STUFF LIKE REAL MEN AND THAT THE MEDIA STOP BEING BIASED FOR THEM!!!!!!!!!

economy is better now again? make up my mind!

we get this crap, and its presidential propaganda, and its bs! the economy doest turn from a flop, for 5 yrs, and magically turn better cause some MSNBC writer thinks it did. being on welfare, and collecting work on behalf of the government doesnt mean its getting better. fri a guy was laid off, he hanged himself at work a couple hrs after getting the news that this was his last day for a while, and he did it at work, in front of everyone, NO NEWS ON THAT THO HUH? everyone here, to include MYSELF who know the job market is falling, and has been and hasnt improved. you have grads every year added to a workforce that doesnt count them. you have those who were not able to find a job before UEB's ended, and they are counted as "gave up". BULL SH!T im 46 yrs old, and if i get laid off i am screwed. sure i will get UEB's that do little to help. pays rent, ring a ding-ding! cost of living has gone up to the point, normally, i would be able to save. been playing catch up since day one for over 1 1/2 yrs now. matter of fact, making the same exsact amount back in 2001-2004 i was able to rent an entire house, stay full, and still afford to buy something nice. i live in a area now, that is about as cheap as it gets, and i barely make it. i lost 40 lbs and looks like its gone. (fyi i need that 40lbs, i look like a starving ethiopian i have no f'ing ass left to lose if i lose this job by getting laid off). fact is, if Nobama cuts military spending on the navy, i can kiss my job goodbye, permantly here in 6 months, maybe less. then me, like about another 800-1000 workers are on the list. thats bare bones till the jobs are done, with the axe falling randomly on the next low senior employee till shut down.

i will not hold it against anyone, i am grateful i was able to serve on the taxpayers time, with an oppertunity to learn a few things. i spent my time working and putting forth a solid effort + on my part. no forman has a problem with me working under them, and a light pinch of dissapointment if i dont make their roster. im not the sharpest tool in the shed, and i may not be the 1st to finish any good race on the track, but stay at it till the fans go home, and the job is done. i may leave spent, sore, and wishing it were easier, but i leave with pride i did a good job in making something that lives depend on, for our country. it will be dependable, and worth every penny i can make it on a personal basis.

a saying going around the plant, "just living the dream". i used to play with most of the stuff i made when i was a kid. now i build/make the real things. not just at this place but every place, union, and non union. i dont have that option anymore. i wont get to see what i made, go out the door, and the owner(s) who cant be happier. seeing what i made being driven behind a semi, with something else i used to make being hauled on the back. farm field with the any type of equipment being used. locomotive engine parts, and bodys. lawn care, to the government buildings they care for, as well hospitals. and the list goes on a bit....

but so much for pride, and workmanship.

thats our economy.

plus, i would like to hear from any one person, how when you have pi%% poor job growth, and that isnt counting AGAIN the uncounted into the equasion. that actually is setting the true numbers to about 23% or better. Then when jobs pay less, and food, to gas is up thru the roof, AND STILL CLIMBING how the economy is BETTER!

not to mention all we have heard this year so far, is a FAILING ECONOMY immediatly AFTER they claim it was better..... W T F? the whitehouse and the MSNBC mouthpiece, like to report this great wonderful stuff... to find out it wasnt even close to true. might be why i like to read the news, and comment. you can as plain as day, catch them (news/gov) in the bs that does nothing but DEGRADE our nation, and the people, hence for go the clowns. maybe it was dirty reporting back in its day, but at least it was HONEST. there isnt 1 oz of integrity in the media, and in our government to amout to anything. crooks until busted, and we pay them to rip us off, with regulation other than where it belongs. accountability in government? where?? catch the top leaders in lies, scandal, and u name it... and they still get re-elected. pelosi the biggest of them all. we elect congress and senate to run wall street, and any other big market they can dig a finger in off of taxpayer profits.

both said it in the presidential debate... when who had shares in what, and where. if one elected official who serves in the the WH, senate or congress have a finger in some form of $ scam when it comes to spending. from stocks to the buisness in the stocks. they have fingers in it. then we keep electing them. they give themselves a raise even... can i get just 1 of those? just 1!? but still, not afraid of raising taxes across the board... not going to change for middle income, $250,000 yr or less. i remember the 1st time this came out, there was going to be no loophole left to close, flat rate for all. hmmmm, now its "loop holes". Nobama MADE nothing but loop holes with his tax incentive, that we ended up paying major buisness tycoons, such as GE, Lockheed, Boeing... duh? anyone drop a head to the desk cause they forgot about it making the news just months ago? the year before, who made out?

romney has his fingers in shares too.. ryan.. but, the thing is, we can take the better of the 2, so our kids have something. get the industry back on its feet, so we too can be stronger to make a stand for real change, in a peaceful way, rather the way we are heading right now. in case some missed it, the press to the fed reserve bill printing office... never would anyone in their right mind deface the value of the US Dollar when we are in economic straits. to cover debt loss. these are the people the president gave a job to to help run our country. from janet on down the line, one huge costly fail, after fail... incompetent, and unaccountable. things wont change, unless We The People, change them.

US Treasury bonds owned overseas accounted for $6.0 trillion of the national debt - who owns the other $10.0 trillion? Trade imbalance? Foreign Property ownership?

China is the largest foreign owner of US Treasury bonds estimated at $1.153 trillion worth but it's also down 12.6% from last year because China is selling off their treasury bonds. Japan is the next largest at approximately $1.121 trillion worth.

When the world economy stalls, government's bring in less revenue, which means diminished services etc. In order to keep those services going you have to borrow. Now that the economy is showing an uptick...there is no reason for business to continue their hiring freezes, terminations, cuts in production, expansion cuts and reduction in spending etc... It is the inaction of business owners that's could drive another economic stall.

The other issue that we're dealing with in this final stages of the recovery is that half of the country is being fed a bunch of lies by the Republican Party, to the point that they sincerely believe the second coming of Jesus is actually Myth Rmoney.

More people working means people are earning money and buying goods. More people working means the tax burden is spread out and it's impact on the house hold wallet isn't nearly as significant as it is today. When more people are working and earning a paycheck, they usually have a demand that needs to be met...a bill, a new car, whatever. But the end result is this, you pay taxes on those newly purchased goods and those taxes will go to pay Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries. When people are buying goods, they are helping pay down the deficit because the government doesn't have to borrow. So the concern shouldn't be that the government is spending too much, what you should be doing is pressuring corporate America to get involved and get people to work. Romney is correct when he says that government can't create jobs, but government can create better conditions for business to thrive...they just have to want to get off their collective asses and help move this country forward.

The huge debt, out-sourcing of jobs, and the economic depression they've left behind from the Reagan-Bush Sr.-Bush Jr. era's will just be a distant memory as we balance of federal budget and create jobs again like during the Clinton era, where if Gore and Obama followed him we wouldn't have had war's and also might have paid off our national debt with the surpluses.....hard to believe that Republican policy is responsible for all 16 trillion but at least we will never have to see them in the White House again.

BTW -

The BLS says the labor participation rate is at its lowest in 30 years.

The BLS says there are 5 million FEWER people in the work force today that when BHO took office, primarily due to frustrated / discouraged workers dropping from the workforce - whose unemployment payments have run out.

The BLS said something like 9 million Americans are UNDEREMPLOYED - or work part time but WANT full time employment.

General growth in the US population over the Obama presidency has been about 5,000,000 people.

The government admits to "7.8% unemployment".

Oh yea, "BTW", Americans being accepted into the SSI Disability is happening at an all-time record rate... They don't show on any negative labor indicator... Coincidence?

Add all this together and we end up with 23 million Americans out of work because they stopped looking for work due to discouragement, there are no jobs for them at all, or they are unemployed or UNDERemployed.

The BLS paints a horrible situation. To cherry pick the data to find evidence in support of OBAMA is appalling! Where I come from, if it walks like a duck, talks like a duck, and looks like a duck, WE CALL IT A DUCK!

At what point in history did Americans decide 23 MILLION other Americans being unable to put food on their tables was OK???????? "BTW", this is where the 50% increaseof food stamp recipients comes from...

Moderate in Madison,

I don't know what country you are talking about, but unemployment benefits in the US have an extension for 99 weeks do to the poor outlook on jobs. That's multiple 'few months to find a job'.

My friend has a Masters Degree from USC (the one in California) and he's been unemployed since 2009. My wife is currently unemployed. Other people are working 2 days a week or multiple part-time jobs and or for far less money than what they were making just to stay afloat.

And for all the yippies out there who liked Obama bailing out the auto industry the way he did. Guess what? Chrysler was bailed out in the 1980s and again into 2010. I guess we'll go through this in another 30 years or maybe fewer.

The President didn't create the environment that currently has 23 million unemployed. Deregulation of several of our most vital industries allowed business to play with your money and health. Who are the champions of deregulation? Republicans! There is no amount of deregulation that would benefit the economy...but the there is a constant argument against the process and the main argument against any type of regulation is that it costs too much. So lets talk about costs:

Water Pollution - the illegal dumping of toxic chemicals which invades the water and poisons your wife, grandfather, kids and husbands. Cost: Family members die.

Health Insurance - cancel insurance or deny medical claims because the toxic water you drank and bathed in caused you and your entire family some form of terminal cancer. Cost: Family members die faster physically and because they weren't given any options - they died emotionally.

Hospitals - turn away people who drank and bathed in the toxic water because they exceeded their coverage cap. Cost: Family members die in extreme pain and anguish.

Business - pay all of their executives grand salaries and bonuses, however the company fails because they gambled poorly on your investment. The company goes bankrupt and out of business and thousands of employees are sent to the unemployment lines. Cost: Family members give in to dispair and some go to the extreme and kill themselves.

I can continue to talk about the costs of deregulation, but it's not going to change Republicans minds. For the rest, Democrats, Independents and Undecided - just remember how we got where we were 4 years ago. It is getting better, but we, not just the President, have more work to do. We have bad policies that Republicans put in place and operated this country on over an 8 year period that need to be evaluated, fixed and if necessary, rescinded, by common sense politicians. Trust me, it's going to take another 8 years just to get our country solvent again and Republicans have demonstrated over the last 12 years that they are not up to the task.

Randy 802370 -- I admire you for bringing up NAFTA. And who signed NAFTA? Bill Clinton did -- two months before leaving office. The Dems say the Republican Congress would have made it happen anyway. But who knows? It was drawn up during the first George Bush's term, but he refused to sign it. Clinton sold us to China with his signing of NAFTA. The second George Bush walked into what had to become a disaster insofar as jobs and the economy was concerned due to NAFTA. And Obama blames Bush????? My 11-year-old grandson informed me that China owns the U.S. I only know there has been a lot of outsourcing (which accounts for a lot of job losses).

If you have ever sold real estate, insurance, or taken a course in economy, you know everything depends on supply and demand. Jobs, or lack of jobs, depend on demand. The demand for jobs in this country (especially in manufacturing) dropped drastically, and the supply was being sent to us from other countries due to lower wages and lack of regulations in the building sector in these countries. Supposedly, we could afford to purchase the product at a cheaper price. Oursourcing is killing us, so to speak. We need to bring our jobs back into this country, or at least charge the companies who are having factories, etc. built in these foreign countries a high enough fee that they feel the impact. I'm like NaughtyMossy, I'm not the "sharpest tool in the shed", but I've been around long enough to see what has happened.

No matter how you try to spin it, the picture painted by the latest BLS report is that employment is improving.

Here is a relevant portion of the BLS report, THE EMPLOYMENT SITUATION -- SEPTEMBER 2012

The unemployment rate decreased to 7.8 percent in September, and total nonfarm
payroll employment rose by 114,000, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported
today. Employment increased in health care and in transportation and warehousing
but changed little in most other major industries.

Household Survey Data

The unemployment rate declined by 0.3 percentage point to 7.8 percent in September.
For the first 8 months of the year, the rate held within a narrow range of 8.1
and 8.3 percent. The number of unemployed persons, at 12.1 million, decreased by
456,000 in September. (See table A-1.)

Among the major worker groups, the unemployment rates for adult men (7.3 percent),
adult women (7.0 percent), and whites (7.0 percent) declined over the month.
The unemployment rates for teenagers (23.7 percent), blacks (13.4 percent), and
Hispanics (9.9 percent) were little changed. The jobless rate for Asians, at
4.8 percent (not seasonally adjusted), fell over the year. (See tables A-1, A-2,
and A-3.)

In September, the number of job losers and persons who completed temporary jobs
decreased by 468,000 to 6.5 million. (See table A-11.)

The number of persons unemployed for less than 5 weeks declined by 302,000 over
the month to 2.5 million. The number of long-term unemployed (those jobless for
27 weeks or more) was little changed at 4.8 million and accounted for 40.1
percent of the unemployed. (See table A-12.)

Total employment rose by 873,000 in September, following 3 months of little
change. The employment-population ratio increased by 0.4 percentage point to
58.7 percent, after edging down in the prior 2 months. The overall trend in
the employment-population ratio for this year has been flat. The civilian labor
force rose by 418,000 to 155.1 million in September, while the labor force
participation rate was little changed at 63.6 percent. (See table A-1.)

The number of persons employed part time for economic reasons (sometimes
referred to as involuntary part-time workers) rose from 8.0 million in August
to 8.6 million in September. These individuals were working part time because
their hours had been cut back or because they were unable to find a full-time
job. (See table A-8.)

In September, 2.5 million persons were marginally attached to the labor force,
essentially unchanged from a year earlier. (These data are not seasonally
adjusted.) These individuals were not in the labor force, wanted and were
available for work, and had looked for a job sometime in the prior 12 months.
They were not counted as unemployed because they had not searched for work
in the 4 weeks preceding the survey. (See table A-16.)

Among the marginally attached, there were 802,000 discouraged workers in
September, a decline of 235,000 from a year earlier. (These data are not
seasonally adjusted.) Discouraged workers are persons not currently looking
for work because they believe no jobs are available for them. The remaining
1.7 million persons marginally attached to the labor force in September had
not searched for work in the 4 weeks preceding the survey for reasons such
as school attendance or family responsibilities. (See table A-16.)

The improvement in the economy has occurred IN SPITE of the GOP in Washington. It is obvious that they have done everything in their power to keep the economy moving slowly...whether it is the debt ceiling debacle to refusal to sign on to any job creating legislation.

Do you really want the Feds taking over you profession? The definition of insanity is to keep repeating the same flawed action expecting a different outcome--that's Oblabla!

Wow..... don't wanna touch that topic do you? The obfuscation and unwillingness to compromise led by Mitch McConnell and his minions is one of the anti ethical and treasonous campaigns set forth by elected officials in my lifetime. They without a doubt put party before country and more so, put party before the people.

But keep sucking up their spilled milk of distortion. It's the only trickle down you'll still have after this election is decided.

16 TRILLION in debt, and going up.

Government spending $1.40 for every $1. that comes in via taxes (Credit card from the bank of china)

More people on food stamps, welfare and gov assistance than EVER BEFORE

the most people out of work for the longest sustained period of time since the depression (What’s that three letter word? J O B S )

4 Americans murdered in Libya, and obama knew what was going on and then lied about it.

Boarder patrol agent murdered with gun from failed obama/holder op, fast and furious

535 Million tax payer dollars to Solyandra

Tax payers money to ABC Battery

Real estate is starting to sell in my area and that seems like a good sign.

People that I know that work in health care have been gainfully employed since the great recession hit. I guess the field must be recession proof.

The folks that have lots of money have done very well. The tax laws greatly favor the wealthy. These past four years have been a phenomenal time to have money in the stock market. The capitalist are doing fine with there ridiculously low tax rates.

I agree flyingfarm... I voted "feel better" not because President Obama has done anything... it more that since the recession and my pay (COLA) has been frozen for 3 yrs, I focused in getting some debts paid off (while creating othere but not too large) so overall my economic outlook is better but it is the same "income"... prices are the same and gas is killing me.

I do account for some of the good feelings as people see Nov.6 as a new beginning and look forward to a new Presidency.

These very same war mongers did help to get Cheney's company, Haliburton, NO BID CONTRACTS...BLOOD FOR WAR PROFITS! Republicons as usual chickenhawks. Vote against the same failed Romney/Bush/Cheney team. Why vote for the same failed Bush team?

If the Economy were improving, why are there still 23,000,000 people out of work, looking for jobs, and standing in long lines. Jobs to fill for the overqualified. College Graduates still for as long as a a couple of years haven't been able to find careers, or other types of work.

Much of the original work force have stopped looking for current work, living off Government Programs.

If the Economy were so good, why is the housing Market still selling houses for way under the value of the homes?, continuing Foreclosures/no credit?--

People still have to "Eat". Much of the Country is still scraping by---Food Banks are asking for Donations.

The Economy is not back, but "Personal Necessities" still have to be purchased.

The Middle Class is still in dire straits; look around at your family members.

The amount of student debt has increased to record levels during President Obama’s administration despite longstanding promises to tackle the problem, according to a report by the College Board Advocacy and Policy Center.

According to the report, “borrowing grew more rapidly from 2005-06 to 2010-11 than it had during the preceding five years.” Both borrowers and graduates picked up debt beyond the rate of inflation.

The report found that “debt per borrower grew at an average annual rate of 2.1 percent beyond inflation and average debt per graduate grew at an average annual rate of 2.7 percent.” Compare those numbers to 1.4 percent and 2.5 percent, in the time between 2000-01 and 2005-06.

Tuition costs for all types of higher education have hit record highs. The average tuition for a 4-year public university has risen from $6,865 when Obama took office to $8,655 for the 2012-13 school year.

Senator John Thune (R., S.D.), chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, blamed President Obama’s policies for the “bleak economic outlook” that young Americans face.

“President Obama’s failed economic policies resulted in 43 straight months of unemployment above eight percent since the start of his administration,” Thune told the Free Beacon.

“Twenty-three million Americans are unemployed or underemployed and nearly five million Americans have been out of work for over a year,” he said.

“The fact that 50 percent of recent college graduates remain unemployed or underemployed is unacceptable.”

Thune outlined an economic plan to help recent graduates. “By providing tax certainty for our job creators and eliminating excessive government red tape and regulations on our employers, we can get Americans back to work,” he said.

Generation Opportunity, a non-partisan, non-profit youth polling organization, found that young people care more about jobs than college debt.

In a July 27 to July 31 poll of 1,003 young adults, the organization discovered that 64 percent of those surveyed “believe the availability of more quality, full-time jobs upon graduation is more important than lower student loan interest rates.”

Twenty-six percent of those surveyed said that they delayed “pay[ing] off student loans or other debt” due to the bad state of the economy.

There is no promises of bipartisan job, there is no promises of transparency anymore, no promises to reduce the number of people on welfare , actually his policies lower the bar for welfare recipients. Chrisbunch of numbers....yes so because of the republican and greedy wallstreet and banksters crashing the economy, prices for student debt is going up.

SO WHY DID REPUBLICANS TRY TO MAKE THE LOW INTEREST RATES GO TO HIGHER RATE????

Republicans wanted the interest rate for students to go higher to stop the economic recovery and to give more profits to themselves..

Republicons were expose on national tv once more and finally caved in to keep interest rate at the same low rate.

Why do republicons create voter suppression laws against students and the young?

To keep students from voting for their own own self interests. Republicons did studies and found that students tend to vote for Democrats, so repubs set up series of laws to try and stop students from voting all over the nation!

There is very little new constrution going on it's the sale of existing houses that is propping it up. You have to jump barrels & hoops to get a loan. We called our banker to get our loans refinanced & consolidated as my job is gone & my wife had to close her business. We have 11 investment home rentals that we are paying the mortgages on in 3 different loans that we only owed $187k on combined. They sent us a foreclosure notice after that the 1st. time we were late in 26 yrs of doing business.

O'bama's policies: "Blame, blame and boo hoo. "I don't have any failed policies." " Nasty old Republicans did it all." Of course he doesn't have any ideas about how to fix things either. Who else gives 3 year work permits to people from another country when he doesn't have enough jobs for his own people? And he said himself that we don't need unskilled labor jobs in this country. Sure he doesn't. Because if he pushes the middle class down to lower class, and then gets the upper class in his pocket, then he has total control. Can control where people travel with gas prices, can control what people say or know with media, can control what we eat through price control. But he still can't convince intelligent people that he's telling the truth. Because guess what folks, he ain't.

Doctor Logic: Finaly some logic and less empty headed namecalling by the guys who helped destroy our economy with their sad self-identification with the very rich -- not too self aware.

but please allow me to stem the tide of talk about the racist remarks about General Colin Powell. It was and is a clever strategy to deflect everyone's attention from Powell's serious message to all Americans. all Americans should be parsing his words before they vote.

CBSNews: In his endorsement (of President Barack Obama) Powell said, "When he took over, the country was in very, very difficult straits, we were in one of the worst recessions we had seen in recent times, close to a depression . . . we were in real trouble."

Colin Powell also cited the recent housing market pickup, the auto industry recovery and rising consumer confidence. "I think generally we've come out of the dive and starting to gain altitude," he said. "I see that we are starting to rise up," Powell said, while also acknowledging that problems such as unemployment and the housing market still have a ways to go, but that we are on the right track.

I also saw the president get us out of one war, start to get us out of a second war, and did not get us into any new wars," Powell added. "The actions that he has taken with respect to protecting us from terrorism have been very, very solid."

Powell also accused Romney of changing his foreign policy positions in recent months. "I think there are some very, very strong neoconservative
views that are presented by the governor that I have some trouble with,"
Powell said. General Colin Powell also said he is very concerned that Romney's neocon associates could maneuver us into a
war with Iran; . . . that they would welcome a "new, inexperienced, weak president they can maneuver”...as Powell says they did Bush, Jr.

Nuf said. This white woman will race the storm to the voting booth as fast as I can to cast an early vote for the black man who will take care of me and our families.. I recognize a racist remark used as a strategy to keep us from thinking about General Powell's important statements and I say to He** with that stuff. One more early vote for Obama

Politico Journo, while what Powell said is true, there is no correlation between that truth and Obama's policies having anything to do with those truths. We may have been better off now if Obama didn't waste trillions of dollars on temporary jobs and who knows the true future costs of Obamanation Care. We got out of Iraq on Bush's time schedule, not Obama's. Obama didn't get us in any new wars, but the Middle East is in turmoil and we're waging a proxy war with Syria. So go ahead race to place that vote since it all comes down to what share of the handout you can get from money Obama borrowed from China. Wrong....we have no use for, no respect, no trust for that deceptive lying pair of weasels YOU helped put into office in 2008. SHORT TERM VICTORY for you and your fellow lying liboturd lemmings. If you can do it with nothing more than name calling Moderate (lol) then all the power to you. If you can do it, the country is clearly in tough shape. Anyone who votes to go back to the idea of trickle down economics and thinks this time it will work is insane. If Romney wins it will be proof that the inmates are running the asylum and there will be little left to hope!

I noticed in the polling data, no one in the private sector was polled ? ... Only Government Union Employees.

Of course Government Employees feel better, they make 400% more than the average American and instead of working 50 years before retirement ... Government Employees only have to work 25 year ... instead of having to set aside their own $ out of their own pay check for retirement like the private sector, Government Employees are just given a Guaranteed retirement without contributing ONE G D DIME ....

Hey America ... do you ever feel like a G D puttz

BTW, the illegal immigrants are totally tickled with O'bama's policies, and probably the chinese too, after that stupid statement he made about Americans not needing unskilled labor jobs. Call me Kooky, but he's supposed to be president of the United States of America. So why does he hold such blatant contempt for the natural born and hard working citizens of the United States? How do you trust someone who lies so blatantly and doesn't even try to make it convincing? Please don't insult the intelligence of the rest of us by trying to force us to believe what we know for a fact isn't true. Its just a matter of common decency and respect.

The majority of those who want a job will find one within 5 months, that's a long time but they should be OK. If you don't get an increase in Social Security it is because there is low inflation, that's a good thing.

BTW, sorry I don't believe you because I have two sons, one in roofing industry who cannot get a job because the jobs have all gone to illegal immigrants and he supports himself by flipping burgers because he is ineligible for government assistance. My younger son does odd jobs because in desperation a pizza hut manager hired him for 2 hours a week and he spent more money to get to work than he could make. To add insult to injury, this knocked him out of unemployment benefits, and he isn't eligible for a food stamp card like the illegal immigrants receive, so we must make sure he can still eat. So tell me where your pres is doing such a great job. The fact is, the only way you can tell me he's doing a good job is to do the same thing he is doing every day. Lie, swear to it and command everybody to pretend to believe it.

I'm not taking about a person, but their values....that would be a republican, low taxes(even though we started two wars), trickle down, no regulations...that is what it got us. Obama has been trying to undue the the republican party and Bush got the country into in 8 years. You all like to say Obama spent this and that. Well take out the cost of the two wars, and the bail out that Bush started and what do you get. Why do you all just ignore those facts?

Genius add the the same and worse together!!!!! Dear God!!!!!

We have 5.6% unemployment here in Iowa. There is an oil boom and hiring in the Dakotas. Perhaps some of you should look elsewhere and look beyond your state's borders. Of course Romney wants to cut the wind energy subsidies so the booming wind energy business will take a hit here if he is elected. You can put the blame all you want on Obama, but a lot of businesses are making more profits and not hiring you until after the first of the year. Then there will be a business boom in January right after the election especially if Romney wins and then the Republicans can take all of the credit for the sudden burst in growth of the economy. Republican business men and CEO's are holding you hostage, because the enduring message from Republican leaders in Congress is, "Our goal is to make Obama a one term president!" Since 2010 they have put the clamps on helping the economy. Why don't you apply at one of Mr. Adelson's casinos. He seems to have millions to throw around (100M) trying to oust Obama. Do you suppose he pays benefits?

How are Americans feeling better about the economy when it hasn't improved? Are people blind to the cosmetic fixes you see around you? It's like having a house where everything appears clean and sanitary. But, behind the couch, under the coffee table and behind the toilets are nasty and filthy.

Im not seeing any real progress whatsoever. The lines at the temp jobs facility is as long as it's always been. My retirement account is still not making ANY money at all, my pay hasnt gone up in 3 years now and my home price is still stagnant. Home sales are still modest at best...dozens of homes are still sitting empty all acorss my neighborhood (and its a sought after community).

The media says whatever they need to say to get your attention. Fox News claims the exact opposite, when in reality it's about int he middle and both are wrong. All I know is that my vote for Obama in 2008 didnt include the agenda he has displayed to the public.

So, you can give away more of your rights, and support scum like Brewer and Arpaio, just don't ask for help when you finally do open your eyes and realize it's too late.

              Have fun!

I guess you can always find those exiting the crack house or laying in the street outside a discount liquor store and interview them. Getting better. Does anyone know a friend or family member doing better than 4 years ago.

I know too many who have been laid off, taken jobs at significantly lower pay, work at any job to make ends meet. College kids can study, work hard and then wait for the improvements to come. Of course they can do it in their parents living room.

Better is only in the minds of the Barry nation. Or the Obamanation as it should be called. Another article that consumed electronic space.

It's obvious NBC is in panic mode. The company I work for has laid off 50% of employees, my salary has remained stagnant for 3 years, price of gas, food, etc. has sky rocketed, and we were just told our health insurance is increasing 17% in 2013 because of Obama Care. Nice try, but I'm not fooled.

If I were you, @Lars, I'd be looking for a new employer. They're BS'ing you big time. If you don't see that your, probably top heavy, company executive types are screwing you, then you need to start looking into the numbers. THEY never take a cut/loss/forgo a bonus. Meanwhile, they cut staff, cut overtime, cut, eliminate and decrease their share of employee benefits. It doesn't affect the top guns, Lars, they just want their numbers to look right.

Unless you look at car dealers they have a 2% profit margin. Most of the time in the last 4 years they would have one car dealer float two other car dealers to prevent closing down the other dealers.

This article is nothing but a liberal propaganda ploy by a liberal news media that is losing readers and is equal to a third world propaganda news corp.

Obama didn't do anything but give them all that money to save them and left them in debt. Romney wanted them to go BK so they could write off the debt and come out clean you moron! The dems have not put forth any jobs legislation.. They want people who are making large debts going to college to get out and get a manufacturing job.. That is how the russians brought their people into line! make them work for the government and pay them low wages so they have to bend their knees and hold out their hands for the hand outs the government gives them. That supposed buyout insured the price of beef would not lower anytime soon. And just the other day there was an article pushing peanut butter. You Republicans make me laugh...Mitt Romney's big idea is to cut taxes for the rich and deregulate industry like George W. Bush did...that worked swell, didn't it? Romney's idea on healthcare is to SLIGHTLY lower the premiums for those with health insurance while those who don't have it will die. Wallstreet will have even fewer rules than in 2007-08, the rich will pay less in taxes (because equal rate cuts ALWAYS favor the rich) and if Romney-Ryan have their way your social security will be invested by the same people who crashed the economy the last time. Not to mention your parents will be at the oh-so tender mercy of the insurance industry who will think up creative ways to keep them from getting policies. In short everything that Bush wanted to do will be done...Romney is Bush's third term. Oh and by the way...being a private equity guy does not translate to knowing how to create jobs...look at how Mass. did with Romney as governor if you don't believe me. Republicans have a single playbook: tax cuts and deregulations. The offest thing is a joke...they won't even announce WHAT loopholes they'll close so you can bet if you're not rich you'll be getting screwed. But hey, Bush had a great economy so obviously those policies work...if you're in China whom Romney wants us to emulate.

Governor campaigns and presidential campaigns are different many so called red states have been Democratic controlled for over 100 years.

Not sure where you're going with this, but most of the governors of Massachusetts for the past thirty years or so have been Republicans. Romney claims to have balanced the budget without raising taxes and worked with the legislature, which is indeed mostly Democrat.

But the fact is that instead of raising taxes, he increased fees by $750 million - which does not require legislative approval. And, he vetoed over 800 bills - which is more than one a day for each day he held office.

We in Massachusetts know Mitt well - he was a highly-partisan, non-cooperative, absentee governor who clearly only ran as a steppingstone to the Presidency, and didn't run for re-election because he knew he didn't have a chance of winning. He's a duplicitous phony who will say and do anything to get elected, with no interest in actual public service whatsoever.

And he won't have a chance of winning Massachusetts in the Presidential election either. For good reason.

If you think Romney is the best choice for president, you don't know Mitt.

The last time I looked, rich people (however you define it) are the ones that provide jobs. Jobs are created by the businessperson not by people on receiving end of money from the government. Government can create interim jobs by increasing infrastructure funding however, sustainable jobs come from entrepeneurs. Yes changing to the tax strucutre and closing loopholes will force paying more taxes. People are supporting Republicans because Obama did not keep his promise and did not create jobs; he used the TARP money to help the auto and wall street which were in the plans already when he took office. Can't sit back and wait for the government to solve our problems, it is the go-getter that wants to improve thier life are the ones going to make our lives better by creating companies and jobs.

Why are you guys soooo surprised at this? I agree 100% that the rich should pay more in taxes, but this is not the reason why the USA is in trouble. Obama just likes to spend money we don't have and give freebies to losers.

he was told of al-quida talk of attacks on the wire,

That was looking back when your in the now world it is more difficult looking at what will be coming. the president receives thousands of death threats if he was assassinated who would be to blame if you of them looked like a very low treat was wrong? Their is a lot of talk that is why parents of children never think they child would have ever shot up a school. I have even received death threats. If I was to be killed by one could my wife sue the police for failing to act on talk?

                              THAT"S real good right REPUKE

                              Democraps get really old.

to get support to invade another country and not go after OSAMA!

Yes we Invaded Afghanistan and that put us right next to Osoma. Iraq we used 7 year old Intel that was based on false stuff. people gave in to pressures much like Al Gore did with Ethanol. No one can argue that it is not a bad thing That Iraq is not freed. I wanted them to do it differently but I was not the president And I am not congress.

worked for 40 years and payed payroll taxes every paycheck and social security so they're not ENTITLEMENTS,

You will get back what you paid into it after about 11 years. That is why it needs reform they need to raise the age of when you will get it. when It first started it was right next to the life expectancy.

SINCE the millionares are doing great, have been for the past twenty years, where are all the jobs they are seating on trillions of dollors ,where are the jobs?

you wouldn't recognise the average millionaire if he was standing next to you. You do know most are in their 50's? they own their own business and they have an income of 100-250K on average? Did you know most never paid more than 30K for a car? Did you know most are living in the same house for 20-30 years and it is in the middle of a middle class neighbor hood? Did you know most never inherited more than 10K? did you know Most will be a 1 generation millionaire household? Did you know most are married to the same woman for 30 or more years?

Well, then, you don't know Mitt. He has far less interest in actually doing the job of President than getting elected to do it.

And as for anyone being ordered to stand down in Benghazi, that simply didn't happen. Turn off the Right Wing propaganda and pay attention to the real world. With so many sources of information available to us, there's no excuse for believing something so obviously stupid.

Auto 101 -- I agree with you. Most of us would not know a millionaire if he was standing next to us. My first job was as an executive secretary. There was a girl in one of the offices that drove a beat-up car, all her clothes were tacky, and she lived in an apartment over a garage. She was married, and her husband lived the same way. One day she quit her job, moved into the very elegant large home in front of the garage and they bought new cars. They adopted two children (had no luck having kids) and I found out later they only worked because they wanted to -- already owned the elegant house and drove old cars because they wanted to. They were millionaires.

Also, go to any auction up in the mountains and watch what type usually buys large plots of land. It will invariably be the guy standing around in bib overalls with a straw hat on -- and he'll pay cash -- while the guys in three-piece suits that look so rich just stand there.

                                    Gerri,

Agreed. I used to work in a hotel in South Florida. The owner was an old guy who lived with his wife in the hotel, and would do business from a small table in the cafe. He wore old, shabby clothes, drove a seven year old Cadillac, and was incredibly cheap about maintaining the place. There was even a story that a bellman had once been fired when he mistook the old man for a homeless person wandering the grounds.

The owner and his wife were John D. and Cather T. MacArthur.
