More jobs for class of 2013 than class of 2012

Job prospects for new college grads have been looking pretty bleak, but that trend could be reversing starting this spring.

Employers said they plan on hiring 13 percent more from the class of 2013 than the class of 2012, according to the just-released National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) Job Outlook 2013 survey

That's good news, considering overall seasonally adjusted unemployment ratesare 8.1 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. When you add in into those who have given up looking for work for various reasons, what the BLS calls its “U-6” measure, that number is even higher, 14.7 percent

In another positive sign for new grads, the number of employers saying they had “firm” plans in place to recruit in the spring is up to 37.6 percent from 34.4 percent last year. Overall recruiting plans are up slightly as well, from 18.2 percent to 18.6 percent.

The number of respondents saying they will hire fewer college graduates than last year went down to 8 percent. That's the lowest percentage in the survey since 2007.

Brandon Labam, co-founder of Virginia-based ROCS staffing, which specializes in recruiting college and graduate talent, said he's likewise been seeing the number of job listings increase. Additionally, companies are now not just recruiting for revenue-generating positions like sales, but also infrastructure-building administrative roles. That's a sign companies are more willing to invest in long-term growth.

The appeal of hiring a fresh college graduate is that while they take more training, there's “a lot more upside if you train them well,” said Labam. “They don't have bad habits from another job ... you can mold them into the perfect employee.”

But haven't we been hearing how millennial employees are lazy, difficult to manage, need to be coddled, and just play on Twitter all day? Why would employers want more of them?

Labam says he's seeing that sense of “entitlement” among entry-level candidates from the years past has gone away. No one thinks they're going to get their dream job perfectly tailored to their individual personality handed to them anymore. Graduates now realize they need to demonstrate “hunger” and “passion” in the interview room if they're going to get the job. “It's come back to basics,” he said. “You can't just be good and from a good school. You've got to work your butt off.”

Besides seeing the attitude shift in the candidates, hiring a new college graduate is an inexpensive way for companies to test the hiring waters. They'll take a lower salary, and be easier to get rid of if the upswing falters.

Ho hum, more weak media bulls**t designed to put a positive spin on Obama's disasterous 4 year failure to improve the job market, before the upcoming election.

spider - call it spin or what ever, but we are better off now than at the end of the Bush reign. Like the article points out ..."Employers said they plan on hiring 13 percent more" ... No thanks to the Repubs on that one. The recovery continues - may stall regardless of the next president due to world conditions - and I'm getting out of the stock market until we see how that goes, internationally.

Obama 2012, NO GOP votes this year.

Happy, you are so delusional like a typical Obamazombie Democrat liberal! When Bush was president (with DEMOCRATS controlling CONgress the last two years of his administration), unemployment was 5.5%, gas prices were $1.90, food prices were 20% lower, the GDP growth was 2% PLUS higher, FEWER people were LONG TERM unemployed, and FEWER of our soldiers were being killed in Afghanistan, and our China-funded DEFICIT was 50% LOWER.

IF you think today's numbers compared to the above makes us BETTER OFF, then you can pack your bags and leave MY NATION and go join some socialist liberal Utopia out there through your rose colored glasses! You people on the delusional kook left are America's own worst enemy.

And my vote is going to cancel out YOUR vote, so go pound sand!

Under Bush we had worse stock market crash since great depression, job losses 800,000 per month, housing crash, deficit went up 4 trillion dollars, World Trade center attack, two wars and a we saw a general decline in respect towards the US from our allies and trading partners around the world. Now the economy is recovering, record stock market, wind down of wars all despite Republican efforts to undermine the economy and prevent Obama from passing needed legislation. Republicans historically have created fewer jobs than Democrats and have run up the deficit more. FACT CHECK THAT JHAWKE AND STOP ACTING LIKE A MINDLESS GOP DRONE THAT HAS DIFFICULTY THINKING!

This website and its writers are such a scam and quite frankly it is down right scary. This is completly false information - in fact I work for a company that assist companies and their business plans - startups and business trying to grow. The forcast for the economy is to fall off a cliff in different way than it did in 08 because that was caused mostly by a housing buble crash this crash is going to be directly related to inflation that has already begun but is not being reported by this administration or the media. The fed is being forced to print trillions to keep enough liquidity in the market - but after the elections no it will be revealed that we are past the point of no return on inflation and there is little chance that anything major will get done with congress - in regards to a balanced budget - which is going to cause our once high rating to drop yet again for the second time in modern history - stop selling these lies MSN Please

Hey Happy what blind world are you living in????? Are you kidding me?? you are trying to sell the same line that your loser and chief is pushing on us. Better off?? Hmmm real unemployment around 20 percent - not 8 percent that they are selling you - but even at 8 percent that is nearly 30 million people - let me say that again 30 million - and what have we spent to reach that??? Trillions - between the fed printing money and stomulus and a lack of a budget for our government since your leader took office. You must have never had a budget - probably living off the dole if you think things are better. That a damn lie - and don't try and sell me on losing 800,000 job a month for a few months. Because that has nothing to do with your leader - he has not done one single thing to help - the dems had the house and senate since 2006 and they had all 3 factions of government for two full years and they spent it on 800 billion paying off campaign debts like Solyndra scam and the rest was spent on a Healthcare law that will bankrupt us quicker than would have probably happened anyway. Business Corporations are smart - when the market crash and housing crashed they layed off in mass for about a half a year - to clear their balance sheets - that was not going to go on forever. But lets be clear gas is double what it was immediatly after the crash and that is what breaks the backs of the average American - the average houshold wage is down more than 3,000 a year. And your selling we are better off???? Where is OBAMAS Plan to create jobs or lower energy costs????? WHat is the plan????? Where is the plan to reduce our deficit???? or balance our budgeT?????

How the media is allowed to lie straight up is just really scary to me.. What do we believe from what they print and say?? I dont trust them anymore.. They are bought and paid for by Obama.. It is as simple as that.. They are puppets.. Sad, never thought i would see this in the United States of America.. Really SAD.

Really ... so what if we've had our 3rd summer of flake recovery ... so what if we are slipping back into recession ... so what if we pissed away a Trillion dollars for infrastructure jobs that were never created ... so what if we are now over 16,000,000,000,000 dollars in debt ... so what if we created 4 million new jobs while 12,144,000 new unemployed workers entered the work force ... so what if there are still 23,000,000 unemployed. Don't worry Obama is going to turn it all around ... next year, maybe, it could happen, really. Obama just needs a little more time ... sure that's it, just a little more time. Obama is swell and dreamy too. He loves puppies too, he even named his dog BO after himself Barack Obama. That's sweet, I love Obama ...

I know I AM personally better off with Obama in office. In the past year and a half I completely remodeled my house and paid cash for everything. I paid down my debt and got raises steadily at work!!! The economy was so much improved I sold 1 of my 3 cars, and that buyer paid cash. It is not his fault that there are so many people who choose to be poor and not get ahead and blame everyone but themselves. All these Romneybot Righty Conservatives are looking for someone to hand them a job instead of getting off their butts and getting one themselves.

You people are delusional sycophants. You want to be part of the cool, hip Obama fail train because he's in style. Hangin' with HipHop stars, showing up on Letterman. He's way cooler than some stuffy, white, Mormon businessman. Problem is he is a complete failure. The economy has been stuck in the mud because of his and his cronies' policies, not in spite of them. We are on the brink of something very bad and they continue to drive towards the edge. He's kicked friends to the curb and embraced enemies, killed many good American boys with his sympathetic attitude toward radical Islam, and will kill more. Embassies burn, diplomats get killed and they sweep it under the rug. That was an act that would have been met with a harsh response by a President who was a leader, not a clown.

We haven't seen bad yet. If re-elected, these people will wreck this country so completely, it will be unrecognizable in 4 years. But what the hell, he's giving free phones to the Free Stuff Army. He must care.

"Bush's fault, Bush's fault" You sound like an empty headed doll, who only says the one thing they are programed to say when you pull the string. "Bush's fault".

Bush wasn't the train wreck Gore would have been, but he did some things wrong, mainly trying to get along with the Democrats and doing some of the things they agreed with. Frank and Dodd have more to do with this mess than Bush.

And now, nearly 5 years later, we are worse off. Entire industries have been nationalized as if we are some 3rd world dictatorship in South America. Americans are being killed and dragged through the streets all over the world, while our "leader" embraces the perpetrators. Prices of food and energy are skyrocketing. Careers are gone. Now, for many, having a job means sweeping floors, stocking shelves or flipping burgers for a quarter of what they used to make. The Free Stuff Army has become the ruling constituency. Illegals pour in and get a free pass. We've really fixed things.

We're doing great. Let's do it some more. Spoken like true empty headed sheep.

Here we see the idea of the companies for a perfect employee, “They don't have bad habits from another job ... you can mold them into the perfect employee.” and they are inexpensive since they would take a lower salary or would be "easier to get rid of if the upswing falters". Enough said.

And how do they get an interview in the first place? Apparently, those people who fill out the job descriptions for the company, are trying to hang on to their own jobs, thus let the background check computer analyze prospective job applicants, OF WHICH NO JOB APPLICANT IS QUALIFIED TO FILL THE OPENINGS. This statement I will cross reference to the article on salaries for CEO's, who aren't qualified to run the company, but the Boards of Directors make sure the company officers get hefty salaries and bennies even as the company goes bankrupt.

So this line about "training the 'perfect employee'" is bogus. If the job seeker has a close relative in the plant, they might get an interview, if the relative has some link to the person who does the interviewing. Then comes the background check, which isn't done by the company themselves, but a third party, and the third party is clueless about work in the real world as well.

            Reply#3 - Thu Sep 27, 2012 9:48 PM EDT

Steve Herbert--you DO know that the 'background check' that is done by 'third parties' is MOSTLY to see if you have ever been in trouble with the LAW (and you'd be amazed at how many HAVE) and if you actually told the TRUTH on previous College credits and grades, work experience, etc.

Failed policy after failed policy for this administration and they are attempting to shine a bright light at the end of the dark tunnel. First of all this is all based on projections. It is just like the press saying an economic recovery is coming because housing prices are going back up, 1.5%. Guess what maybe the housing market finally hit rock bottom and it has no were else to go but up.

              1. Europe is shedding jobs at a faster rate and Greece rejects austerity plans. Soon the Eurozone will crash and burn that will have a direct impact on the US and world economy.

              2. We are heading into another winter where fuel prices are at an all time high. Again will affect the bottom line for all Americans.

              3. Deficit to reach 1.16 Trillion this year and for the 4th consecutive year.

              4. Obama care and the single greatest tax on Americans to include 6million middle class Americans directly affected

              5. Stimulus failed unless you were a state union member such as a teacher, fire fighter, or policeman since that money went directly to so called save their jobs. Obama has admitted that there are no shovel ready jobs and failed greatly on that aspect for selling it.

              6. Demand for long-lasting manufactured goods fell as companies cut orders for long-lasting goods by 13.2 percent in August.

              7. Economists expected growth to hover near or below 2 percent for the rest of the year.

              8. The fed causes another downgrade of the US credit rating with its attempt to boost the economy.

              9. EPA's war on coal. A record-high 57 generators will shut down in 2012, representing 9 gigawatts of electrical capacity. This has a ripple affect across coal country and will directly impact consumers.

The list goes on and on if you just do your research and if the media were to do their damn job and report as an independent news source instead of getting their candidate elected they would be more trusted, hell Americans only trust them 40% of the time according to the latest survey so when 60% of Americans think you are full of crap then you will not stay in business long.

The stock market is up because the FED and international banks have said they will step in if things get worse. So stocks go up.. But, because the Pres. is printing money our dollar is worth less, so this hurts the middle class because if the dollar is worth less ( we buy our food and gas in dollars). then gas and food etc. go up and up.. Open your eyes.. Obama is killing our economy and wants it that way.. More rich and more poor.. Makes for a Hitler kind of country.. With him in charge..

... hey ... HappyTimes the lows were were 2009 6 months after Obama took office I know because in Nov. when Obama was elected I sold half the stock that was in my retirement. It came to about $40,000 cash, 6 months later I bought Ford stock at $1.64 per share, I sold for over $16.00 per share. For you Occupiers that over a 1000%, $400,000.00 return thanks Obama. You will really love this ... guess how much I paid in taxes ... ZERO ... because I hold the Ford stock in my IRA/SEP. I now have that money in PFF it pays over 8% per year. That's right my retirement grows by $2,680. per month all on it's own and I don't have to put any of my own money in. Guess how in taxes I pay on that money ... ZERO ... Listen Occupiers the Mega Fat Cat Banker and Wallstreeters gave Obama 90% of his campaign money do you think they did that because he's a swell guy I just went with the big money contributors and didn't listen to his retoreck. Didn't you know Obama has 39 GoldmenSachs guys working in the White House. He got more GoldmenSachs than GoldmenSachs.

Why should a worker stay if they are good enough to get taken away by an employer promising better pay, etc.?

I love how the LIB TARDS have convinced themselves that all of this is due the "obstructionists republicans"....what a crock? Newsflash LIB TARDS: Remember that election in 2010 when the majority of Americans voted to take the credit card away from the teenager because he and his "clown car" supporters in Congress (the majority I might add) were doing such a bang-up job? Barry hasn't done S$%%t to create jobs or improve the economy...when it comes right down to it, he hasn't done much of ANYTHING. HOPE AND CHANGE!! You'd have to be a COMPLETE MORON to vote for this CLOWN AGAIN.

We need an additional 42 million jobs to replace all the illegals that have taken jobs from Americans. Of course, Obama won't put troops on the Mexican border to end this travesty.

Chuuck Roast--HMMM even Obama's officials say we need to create 125K NEW jobs every month, just to 'keep up' with new entrants to the jobs market, NOT even counting those who are unemployed. That is 1,500,000 PER year, times three years and 10 months is 5 MILLION, 750 THOUSAND jobs that we needed to create under Obama, JUST to keep up with the HS Grads, College Grads, and new immigrants, so that means that if Obama is bragging about creating 4 million and someodd thousand NEW jobs, then he is STILL losing jobs at the rate of over a million a year.

And please note--new HS and college grads do NOT 'count' as unemployed, nor do legal immigrants. Because they have never BEEN employed.

ANYONE who thinks that we are better off now doesn't have kids in college, doesn't own a home with a mortgage, and doesn't do the family shopping.

Well creating jobs ain't gonna happen under Obama. The last 4 years (in case you live in a hole) have shown that. How dumb can you possibly be???

The right wingers sure do hate good news. They have been programmed to be negative people. If you want to talk outrage, 12 days on the job and the Congress goes home like the pathetic little obstructionist losers they are. 12 DAYS???? WTF????????!!!!!!!!!!!

Reality check-- I hate to tell you this, but this article did not CONTAIN news. It CONTAINED speculation.

And considering the MSN(BC) network of news has a vested desire to make Obama look good, you can't even claim it is UNBIASED speculation.

PS--my daughter's new mother in law is a real estate agent in Austin TX, one of the supposedly "booming-est" areas of the country real estate wise, and when I met her in May, she was raving about how good her business was doing.

Then later, she let it slip that she laid off her long term assistant this year, and when she says things are going ggod, she mostly meant she had several new listing

She is, however, an ARDENT Democrat. And thinks the economy is just SWELL, even tho her OTHER son has been out of a job for months now, and this is the second time he's been unemployed in the past three years.

Really depressing that the "people" that survived a 4 year high will be able to find a job that pays more than minimum wage!

I would just like to see companies start putting the 50+ workforce back to work. We know what we are doing, we show up every day, we don't make excuses, we don't call in sick once a week, we don't have to run off to tend sick kids, and we actually have a work ethic. The company that opens the door wide for older workers will make a fortune.

Mr. Anthrope--I hear you, but the fact is that the 50+ folks ARE just as likely to call in sick, in many cases have out of date job skills, and are unwilling to change.

AND they make more money, so it is more cost effective to hire a younger person.

and I say that as a 61 year old myself.

MOmaid, I realize older workers call in sick too, but I think when they do, they probably really ARE sick. I may have called in sick twice in almost 40 years, and I was near dead to do that. I think you have a point about SOME older workers not being current on job skills etc. But I would argue the point that younger workers are more cost effective. If they show up late if at all, don't get anything done while they're there, and you turn them over every six months, I would say that that is NOT cost effective.

What this "Writer" seems to not include in this article is the past grads from 2011, 2010, etc. that are back living with their parents & still looking for jobs, will also be competing with these "2013 Grads" for these same jobs

Still a failed "Jobs Program" by "#1 Screw - up In Chief".

All he seems to know how to do is have "More Money" printed to artifically infltate the Stock Market.

To all of the anti-Obama folks, there will be hiring ... and just like all of the jobs created in the past 3 years they will pay $7.50 and hour. That said, anyone making 8 bucks an hour or more that isnt a pro-athlete, or diva-Star (jay-z and George Diva Clooney) will be laid off. ...and everyone with a law or Medical Degree can REALLY pay the student loans off on 7.50 an hour ... Talk to the College Grads working as minimum wage clerks at Macys ... they will tell you the jobs Obama gets em.

Is this just propaganda or are you really ready to believe this crap. Sure Wal-Mart is hiringfifty thousand seasonal jobs but Bank of America just laid off sixteen thousand full time positions. Maybe those thousands of folks in Wisconsin, who were laid off when GE moved its 114 year old X-Ray Division to China, can find s job selling Christmas trees. This move originated by Mr. Obama's Czar for Job Creation. Of course the White House will blame someone else and you suckers will eat it up.

Remember that old saying " tell a big lie, make it simple, tell if often enough, and everyone will eventually believe it.' Yours truly Adolf Hitler.

I remember getting an e-mail one time that said the Posters in German during WWII had the german word for FORWARD plastered everywhere and that was Hitlers word for the masses. Sounds scarey to have a president that would use the same word on us now. Control of the masses, that's scarey. People with nothing, as he holds back what the public needs, will follow him to his warehouse for what ever he wants to give them, or take away from them what ever he may want to have. I can't believe i just wrote that and realised afterwards what it really said. Scarey!!

Their not hiring around here. North Indiana is very slow going into Winter. We've hear too that Energy prices are going to be up because were supplied by a couple of the coal powered plants being shut down. Plans to put windmills on the great lakes doesn't have any legs anymore. That fell through this summer, and that wasn't going to happen at the earlies until 2016, who benefits. It's like the administration has it in for everybody in the country, they really seem to be putting us under more pressure than is really needed. Funny!! And there are people will to vote and support this tyranny.
