Would you believe that despite everything that's happened in the economy, there are more billionaires this year than last? 2,160 of them, to be exact. That's a 9.4 percent increase, according to a report by research company Wealth-X. Billionaires even made more billions, increasing their total wealth 14 percent to $6.2 trillion.
However, not everyone in the “ultra high net worth individual” category, those making $30 million plus, went unscathed by the global economic turmoil. Folks in the $200 million to $249 million bracket saw their fortunes tumble by 12 percent, and their ranks thin by 8.1 percent, said the report, which used data through July 31.
Even when both groups can afford to have fresh caviar helicoptered in daily, guess the richer still get richer and the not-nearly-as-rich can’t take as many expensive vacations.
More money and business news:

You are not hurting if you are SO POOR that you are in $16T in Debt. Those in 16Trillion in debt can just print all the money they wish off the back of future Taxpayers.
At least read the story next time before making a comment.
Thanks Jeff, was done before. You may not consider $16T in debt as being poor, I am sure then you can just pay it off instead of just illegally printing more money for future taxpayers to pay off.
Millionaires - Romney's idea of the 'middle class'.
The over 30 Million have more of their funds in much more stable investments like municipal bonds. The combination of stocks and bonds keeps their taxes down to 15% or less.
The way that Bernake is printing money to prop up the Media Elite's Anoited One, Barack Hussein Obama II AKA Barry Soetoro, ANYONE can be a millionaire or Billionaire if we could also "legally" print our own money.
Trickle down economics at work. It doesn't help the middle class, just the rich.
Republicans hate stimulus because it ruins Romney's chances this fall.
Kurt,
16T in debt and total refusal from the GOP to do anything about it except cut taxes and revenue.?.?
Oh yeah, and cut any government programs that provide assistance those people and children that are most in need.
More class warfare articles from msnbc. Seems you see one of these stories every other day or so: the rich buy more yachts this year, the rich aren't buying such big houses anymore, the rich are vacationing in Aruba instead of Monte Carlo this year. Anything to pit one group of Americans against another, all for the sake of advertising clicks.
Class warfare is what Mitt Romney would do to the middle class.
The politifact.com fact check of the day.
Mitt Romney said, "
Says five studies show his tax plan can cut rates and still bring the same revenue without raising taxes on the middle class." - Rated Mostly False.
Kurt's comments
Yawn..... save it for a relavent argument...and do not even attempt to say Obama created the 16 TRILLION debt
...of San Bernardino and Compton..
Trickle down economics works for anybody who figures out how to stand under the trickle. Thats HOW you get richer. Its a "trickle", not a sprinkler.
Whoa now!
Don't blame Romney...yet
The wealthy have enjoyed the Obama tax cuts for the last 3.5 years
Obama allowed banks to charge any interest rate they want on credit cards
Obama gave billions to private banks, car companies and Solyndra
Obama lets the Fed spit out more cheap funny money for the banks
Obama allowed the housing crisis to escalate, undermining the middle class
Obama included private insurance companies in Obamacare when the whole thing could have been insured by our own Govt, saving us billions $$
.....ya'll are worried about Romney, while Obama has been the wealthy's B-tch this whole time
Millionaires hurting? Well there's the supreme oxymoron!
I guess they'll have to make due with just ONE yacht.
Did their ranks thin by 8.1% because they lost money, or was it more likely because they became wealthier?
Seing a billionarie crying in his double martini because the world treats him so unfairly just chokes me up. I feel his pain.

Bush Bank Bailout Overpaid by Billions: Study
By JIM KUHNHENN | Friday, Feb 6, 2009
WASHINGTON — The Bush administration overpaid tens of billions of dollars for stocks and other assets in its massive bailout last year of Wall Street banks and financial institutions, a new study by a government watchdog says.
The Congressional Oversight Panel, in a report released Friday, said last year's overpayments amounted to a taxpayer-financed $78 billion subsidy of the firms.
The findings added to the frustrations of lawmakers already wary of the $700 billion rescue plan, known as the Troubled Asset Relief Program

There's nothing more embarrassing than the rest of the marina finding out that your $25 million yacht stayed in port this year because you had to tighten the belt and lay off the crew.

That must be the group Kurt's comments belongs too, that's why he's pissed! LOL
OBAMA/BIDEN....2012!!!!
Dan-2287140....First of all, I am not a Rep, but I'm not a stupid Dem lapdog, either.
Obama tax cuts - You mean that when Obama had a Dem Congress and Dem Senate that they FORCED Obama to continue giving the wealthy their tax break?
Obama was all about bank reform, but he bypassed this issue. Who does this issue impact the most? The Wealthy? The poor? ...NO!! The middle class.
As far as printing money....Obama is STILL printing!!
Oh YES, Obama could have stopped the housing crisis. Maybe if he loaned billions to taxpayers instead of his bank buddies, he could have helped the middle class. But the weak, bought-off buffoon cowered to his wealthy masters instead.
I'm not explaining anymore to a brainwashed lemming......we're all really enjoying this "Hope and Change"
"Billionaires sitting Pretty?" I can't wait for the next headline. I'm guessing it will be "Water is Wet."
I've got a news flash....no matter WHO wins, this economy is going to tank
16 trillion in the hole, 8+% unemployment
But if you have children, then Mitt is the better choice
He actually might start paying down the deficit instead of adding more so your kids won't be stuck with it
He might actually TRY to fix the illegal immigrant problem instead of creating a job market where bilingual skills are required
He might kick China in the rear and get some jobs going
I know what Obama is up to, and since I am not poor, nor wealthy, he has done SQUAT for me and my kids. What's the WORSE that Mitt could do? really? More unemployment, more Muslims hating us?....LOL!
Jealousy is such an ugly thing. Yes, I wish I were one of the billionaires, but I’m not and that’s not their fault nor am I their responsibility. And Dems, you can stop blaming Bush – the dems controlled the house AND senate from 2007-2010 and at some point your president has to step up to the plate and take responsibility for his own mistakes. After all, he did manage to add almost 6T to the debt that will be passed on to future taxpayers.
How very Republican of you. Is this not the truth? Has someone printed lies here?
So apparently you feel we people in the 99% should just be kept in the dark and accept our little fate? Apparently you feel that telling us the truth foments dissent? Who the he!! do you think you are? What right to you have to hobble the press in this country which is supposed to be Of THE PEOPLE, For THE PEOPLE and most importantly BY THE PEOPLE.
How wildly arrogant of you.
When your partly loses in 6 weeks have a look in the mirror.
Romeny would be proud of you. You don't get it either. And the saddest bit is you're probably--I'd bet money, you're one of us.
Hardly. My wife and I are retired. We own our home and vehicles outright; we pay off our credit cards every month. And yes, we have a net worth (excluding the value of our home & vehicles, including a brand new Turbo diesel pick-up truck I just bought) just over $1M. And no, we have no yacht. Nor do we live what you might consider to be an extravagant lifestyle. If you think about it, $1M in investments only provides around $30K annual income, assuming a 7% annual return, which is a pretty optimistic assumption. Our burn rate is around $60K/yr, so I have to make up the difference via other sources of income. I'm trying to hang in there until I can qualify for S.S. and medicare - presently have no medical insurance.
There are many others like us or in similar circumstances - net worth of around $1M but hardly living the life of Riley.
Who the hell do you think you are to tell me what I can and can't post? You make a lot of erroneous assumptions, not the least of which is I'm a Republican and plan to vote for Romney. And you think I'm the arrogant one here?
My remarks are directed at exactly people like you, too partisan and classist to see these articles for what they are: class baiting. This site only posts them to rile people like you up so you'll click on it and post hateful rhetoric. Well done, you fell for it.
In fairness, so did I, but at least I have the manners to refrain from personal attacks except in self-defense.
Trickle down works. Honest! ;)
Gumps,
My husband and I are very fiscally responsible and plan to retire as you did, "the millionaire next door" scenario. But the millionaires in this article, and I believe the ones the commenter was referring to, were in the $200 million+ category. I'd still say those people have plenty.
Pedestrian,
Yes, and gushing up works even better. Honest!
Hey AG, the group that is really pitting one group of Americans against the other is the super rich. They are no longer content to have more than the rest of us (something the rest of us can live with as long as they leave enough to keep us comfortable), they want it all and don't care if the rest of us starve!
dave, the super rich don't have to do any pitting of anybody against anybody. They simply have to give orders to their paid minions in the US Congress to provide all the perks they can think of.
Pitting Americans against one another is what the Reps and Sens do to justify their paid-for votes. And of course, we, like sheep, follow right in step.
Yeah, let's you and him go fight. I'll referee.
WOW, how wildly arrogant and presumptuous of YOU! I understood his/her post perfectly. What is your problem?
To AG99, I like your posts. They are thoughtful and make a lot of sense. Most importantly, you behave like a grown-up. I'm afraid I am guilty of giving people a taste of their own medicine.
None of the RWNJ's ever heard of the filibuster?
Folks in the $200 million to $249 million bracket saw their fortunes tumble by 12 percent, and their ranks thin by 8.1 percent, said the report,
Poor babies how my heart bleeds for you.
Why, johnny; are you that jealous of talenbted, ambitious people who overachieve?
Maybe johnny is talking about rich kids like Bush and Romney who never had to earn their own way, but just used inherited wealth to crush opposition and buy their way through life.
Sorry Starderup,
Dan't give you a pass on that one. But Romney earned every dollar he got. He even paid for his education, yes, he borrowed the money from his dad and paid him back. He gave all of his inheritance to charity.
From politifact.com:
"Romney started college at Stanford, where his "allowance" was big enough for frequent plane tickets to sneak home to Michigan see his girlfriend, Ann, according to a recently published book by two Boston Globe journalists, "The Real Romney."
After a two-year missionary trip to France, where he lived sparely as he proselytized door-to-door, he finished his undergraduate studies at BYU, where he married Ann in 1969. He was 22, his wife 19. His parents' wedding gift? A car. Meanwhile, the students — who started a family a year later — lived in a modest, $62-a-month basement apartment, Ann later told the Boston Globe. But they didn't have to work.
"We were happy, studying hard. Neither one of us had a job, because Mitt had enough of an investment from stock that we could sell off a little at a time," she said.
When the couple moved to Boston so Romney could study business and law at Harvard, his parents helped them buy a house.
It's not clear who paid for his education, but Romney wasn't exactly a struggling student: enough cash for plane tickets, a car as a wedding gift, stock that kept him from having to work, help buying a home. "
Spider...no I'm just not gonna cry for them when they become less rich. More apt to cry for the working family that gets stricken with illness then loses their home, not someone who can afford the hit, but if you want to sympathise with them go right ahead, they need your support.
When you don't want to work, it's better for you when there are fewer jobs, then you don't look like the punk lazy a** that you are. Instead, you bitch about those that DO work, and even more about those that could provide you with a job.
His dad provided well for his kids. That's what parents (at every level) are supposed to do.
Hey...$200M-$249M.....that's where Romney is....he lost 12% of his fortune? Whoa, the guy needs a job...vote for Romney...he needs a job! Fortunately, Nancy Pelosi is much richer than that.....she is doing just fine.
Spider 737231 - talented, ambitious people who overachieve?.....You mean had every break given to them?
Such envy here. If you have done well or even just so, don't you help your family? I paid for my sons' educations and was happy to help them. My father gave them cars to get started. He was not wealthy...just wanted to do something for them. Why is this different for the Romney family?
TO: spider-737231 who wrote:
There's a "key" word for you -- "overachieve". So how does that qualify they as "hurting"?
Why should I feel bad for you because your lack of higher education and achievement drive are subpar compared to me? I am filthy rich because I DID IT ALL ON MY OWN by actually doing my homework throughout elementary school, high school, scoring high on my SAT's, and graduating on full scholarship from a school that I never would have been able to afford to go to had I not received a scholarship. Oh, sorry, I would love to consider this conversation however I have a plane to catch (first class of course).

Hey spider and you other bootlickers:
Explain what "work" Romney did last year to "earn" $21.6 million?
Oh, that's right - Bain Capital just stole it for him. From all those companies they "help".
Tell me ONE thing Romney did that made him worth $21.6 million last year to the American economy.
A hotel maid contributes more.
This article and author suck!
Who are the new billionaires? What do they do? And the people worth hundreds of millions why is their wealth down? Is it from investments or taxes? What??
Come on liberal writers, give us the facts and not some half asz story!
They don't want to give you facts, James. Then you might see some rich people got that way through hard work or smart investments, not by bleeding poor people dry. That doesn't generate advertising revenue from schmucks like us who click on these titles.
If they were trying to write an article about those things, then it would in fact suck. As far as I can tell in this case, though, the problem is with your reading ability. It's kind of foolish to rant about the article they wrote, which is a quick note on the impact of the economy on the most wealthy, for not being an article about "what the new billionaires do".
Not to mention turning a basic factual statement into a rant about the liberal media. But then I suppose facts still have a well-known liberal bias, don't they?
Stephen....
You might believe this was a well written article explaining everything in detail, but I do not! If this author was to write about out of control fires and just wrote, "There are fires", would you be satisified? Would you have any questions about the story?
As for liberal writer, you bet your asz! Have you read any other articles from this author? If not, please check them out!
TO: James-2110694 who wrote:
You can be sure that it's NOT from paying "taxes"!
James, you and your comment suck. You didn't ask us any intelligent questions about what billionaires do. Otherwise, we'd tell you.
Jim.....
hahahah you are an idiot! Please answer the questions that I asked above! I know I can't trust the writer to actual have any other information included into the article. Jesus, I can write better articles and don't have any journalism experience. In other words JimD why is the scenario the auther described happening? Oh yeah, that isn't intellegent huh?
Who are the new billionaires? What do they do? And the people worth hundreds of millions why is their wealth down? Is it from investments or taxes? What??
Your comment sucks! You don't tell me anything about who you are or why you're qualified to post here. I want to know how many cars you own and what colour you hair is.
And further more I want to know where you went to school so I can determine if you even know what you're talking about....
get the hint, here James?
probably not.
What did Mitt Romney do last year that was worth his $21.6 million income?
Anyone?
Or was that just money diverted out of the hands of working people and into his offshore bank accounts? Yes? Yes.
I know the Media Elite is hoping we all are billionaires in the form of Zimbabwe Dollars. NBC reporters get paid way too much, I am sure they would not be "hurting" as the rest of us.
Don't worry about the Media Elite. You worry about the posting, extemporizing, mouth breathers who can't balance their own checkbook.
How come they have their own money-we fight terrorists and treasonous as*f-ers,and non-m-f-ers 24-7
Soviet Union: "WE ARE The Seat Of Communism"..they're gone. Remember!!!
American Elitist Aristocrats: "We Are The Seat Of Capitalism......Will the Chinese Manufacture Guillotines at a Good Price?? At the second year, as the French Revolution progressed, 150,000 rich elitist heads rolled off of THE MADAM'S Bastule Men, Women and Children. The price of their cruel greed...Sound Familiar???
Of couse the billionaires are increasing their wealth. Anyone with any cash made out like a bandit during the real estate crash. I confess to have done a litttle banditing myself, but only on a small scale. But enough to realize that people with REAL money could easily make a killing.
The other thing was that being a millionaire isn't what it used to be. The idea is to live off the interest, not go into the capital, since that is the way to poverty. However, at 5% interest, after taxes, that is only $50,000. Not bad, but also not exactly enough to be a new BMW each year.
As an example, all of my CD's and IRA's for all of 2011 made a total profit of: 0%! In other words, if I did not still have my day job, I'd be eating into my capital.
This is where the uber-rich have the advantage. Once the income investment stream is enough to cover even outrageous spending, the rest is just plowed back into other invesetments. So making investments with the interest from the original capital is the way the billionaires get richer, but someone with only a single million is lucky to live as a middle class person if they want to save their capital for their children.
Gee, that's too damn bad! Poor millionaires!
If they think they're hurting they ought to try living on 23% of the wealth like the 99% American People are forced to do while you and your other ONE-PERCENTERS & VACATIONING CEO'S are living a life of LUXURY on 77% of the wealth! May God damn you for living off the 99% American People!!!
Try earning some money. Get off your lazy ass.
Here's a quick lesson in economics for you TR. Wealth is not a fixed number that gets divied up to the masses, (as you and most communist would actually like it be). Wealth can be created and grown. Those that create and grow wealth tend to have more than those who don't.
The first lesson is free. The next one will cost you (thus increasing my wealth a little more!).
You're welcome.
Mickymac, here's a quick lesson in Econ for you. Capitalism only works with the redistribution of wealth. The Republicans version is "Trickle Down Economics" but we have found that it doesn't work because it only trickles to the elite few. And if those with the money wont invest it into america, then yes the government should step in and make them do it. Im all for the government staying out of the way when it comes to capitalism, unless america companies refuse to invest in themselves. We are at a point were something has to be done because the elite have stopped redistributing the wealth, so that the middle class can invest in their products and resources. Capitalism is just as bad and Socialism and Communism, and is some ways its worse. Capitalism stops true innovation, and places more value on a piece of paper with a number on it, than the advancement of humanity. The rich can call redistribution of wealth class warfare, but it doesn't change the facts, that it must be done for the system to work properly.
Why not tell Mitt to get a job? Oh you're hoping he'll have one by November? hahahah!
It sounds like it's better to be a billionaire than a millionaire! Nothing wrong with that. As I've always said, whether you're rich or poor, it's nice to have money.
Of course there are more billionaires. Who do you think this banking scandal favored?
Actually, being a millionaire is not all that great - certainly not like it was, say, 20 years or so. You'd be surprised at how many people actually have a net worth exceeding $1M - you wouldn't know it from looking at their lifestyle.
Even the rich can exceed their means.
That's right...we are the millionaires next door but we have a modest paid for home, two vehicles more than 5 years old and we save like crazy even when we don't have to save anymore...and save ...and save...and save...see a common theme here?
Rick...exactly right.
Rick - You hit it right on the head!! We had two paid for houses, until wife lost her teachin job in a union state. We sold that house (the one with the higher taxes in the no-right-to-work-unless-you-pay-off-union-thugs-state), and moved to the other paid for house in a battleground state. I put the 300 dollars a WEEK in reduced taxes into my pocket. 2 paid for cars (2 and 8 years old). Money in the bank, no debt, good job!! And a HS diploma to boot!! It's such fun coming here to listen to the lazy complain.
You missed my point Peanut. Many of us millionaires are living withing our means. But those means allows only a modest lifestyle. Think about how much you need to save for retirement in order to maintain your current standard of living. Expect to draw no more than, say, 3% from your nest egg if you want to keep your principal intact and you want to protect from the corrosive effect of long term inflation. Do the math, Peanut, and you'll see...
And the redistribution of wealth from the poorest to the wealthiest continues.
In 2009, the disparity between the richest and poorest was the greatest it had been since 1929 (just before the Great Depression, which conservatives now claim never happened!).
It has gotten worse since them. The Fed policies have basically propped up the stock market, and have not helped Main Street. Huge error, but they only view the world through the lenses of Wall Street.
Silly comment. Since the financial crisis, wealth of the top 1% has fallen approximately 30%. In nominal terms, the amount of wealth erosion is massive. Not that this warrants our pity, but the notion that what happened was wealth being transferred from poor to rich is complete nonsense.
Congratulations on epitomizing the end result of 3 years and counting of mindless class warfare.
billyray, where have you been for the last 30 years? I think you missed a few things. I also think your 30% figure is a bit out of date.
BillyRay -Did you not read the article? Does it not say billionaires have seen huge gains? Where do you suppose that wealth came from - the tooth fairy???
Sorry, but it is a zero sum game. When the richest get more, the rest of us have less.
The class warfare has been perpetrated by the rich on the poor and middle class, and yet there are still plenty of lackies and apologists who claim the opposite. Until there is, in fact, some redistribution, we will continue to spiral in. We have been going downhill (middle class) while the rich have gotten incredibly richer, ever since Reagan started trickling down on us.
Oh really? Gee, if it really was a zero sum game then the amount of wealth would be constant and would never vary over the years. Funny, since the 19th century, the U.S. population has grown significantly, and with it, the number of millionaires. How can that be?
Rich people hurting really ? They should walk a mile in my shoes.
I have. I've been poor and I've been wealthy. Want to guess which one is better? That's what motivated me to change my status.
as i sit here on my unpaid lunch while making $12.00hr i really feel sorry for all there suffering.maybe the gov't will grant them some welfare help or food stamps...i wonder if you can use food stamps at the counyrt club??? idiots
And what choices have you made that caused you to only earn 12 bucks an hour?
lulu98, are you as ignorant as you make yourself out to be?
The choice to work.
Well, even millonaires have to eat! Are my caviar-stamps ready for pick-up yet?
In this case, we need to help the ultra riches by giving them more tax cuts!!!
Class warfare my a$$. Why do so many right wingers think that anyone who doesn't buy into the trickle down economic scam doesn't work/have a job?? Yet these same people are always the first to fan the flames of the class warfare going on *within the middle class*. Oh, teachers make too much, this guy gets a pension and I don't, these people don't deserve to be protected by a union, minimum wage is bad for you, this guy is collecting unemployment and thus is a leech, only business people are worth anything, firemen are a drain on the economy... So envious of your fellow middle class because they make a buck more an hour than you. Oh, and BTW, now according to Mr. Romney, you're middle class if your family income is $250,000. Yet, the median income is what, $60K? That's a pretty long tail distribution there. Only 60K between ZERO and the median, but 190K bertween the median and the top of the middle class. That's a huge difference between the median and the average. So who is stirring up class warfare??. Totally brainwashed. As all the wealth continues to concentrate into fewer and fewer hands, how do we pay off the debt? After all, the rich shouldn't be taxed, they are the "Job Creators". Worship the Job Creators. It all lands on the backs of the fast decreasing middle class. Wake up! And BTW, I work hard and long. In business. So don't call me a slacker, just because I tell it like it is..
You're not a slacker, moonbat. But you are a whiner, and a hypocrite. You complain about right wingers making sweeping negative assumptions, and then proceed to do the very same thing yourself.
What sweeping negative "assumptions" mickymac? That there is class warfare between the middle class? That Mr Romney considers $250,000 income middle class? That wealth continues to concentrate into fewer hands? (and by wealth I mean net worth, not the magic kind that you can somehow create out of thin air) As far as I'm concerned these are simple facts, not assumptions.
Thurman Merman banned, rereg of deathwisher Thermen Merman.
You said it all Moonbat!
"Folks in the $200 million to $249 million bracket saw their fortunes tumble by 12 percent"
Cry me a river.
In before people accuse these factual statistics of trying to further a "class warfare" agenda. Oh wait, no I'm not.
I've found it much more difficult to stretch my millions these days, with the cost of groceries, utilities, clothing & all.
That 8.3% that you all dismiss is a LOT of money to me - $14,360,000 out of my income, to be exact. I had to cut my food budget back by $5,353,000, clothing by $2,523,000, AND I had to go with a bundled phone / internet package. Not sure where to cut the rest of that. So GIVE ME A BREAK!
I feeel so badly for them meaning the millionaires, poor babies!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Don't whine for me. I can take care of my own destiny. I hope you can take care of yours.
Wow! My heart is breaking for the millionaires......who probably have off shored money like Romney!
Eric-913730
Trickle down economics at work. It doesn't help the middle class, just the rich.
Republicans hate stimulus because it ruins Romney's chances this fall.
In retrospect, Obama's trickle up poverty has worked pretty good so far.....
Yet another article aimed at class warfare from the liberal media. It's not our fault you became a news writer. Quit posting this garbage.
Isn't trickle down economics class warfare as well?
I bet Romney is happy. Should we blame Obama for making these billionaire richer and start crying. Republicans are a big joke to the American people.
