Hispanics, Asians see strongest job growth

Job opportunities for Hispanics and Asians have been recovering at a faster pace than those for their white and black counterparts.

While workers from all racial groups have seen job gains since the economy bottomed out in 2009, Hispanics and Asians are edging ahead, according to a new study released Wednesday by the Pew Hispanic Center titled The Demographics of the Jobs Recovery.

“Their employment levels are higher now than just before the start of the Great Recession in December 2007, a milestone not yet reached by white and black workers,” the report stated.

The percentage change in employment for Asians and Hispanics, since the economy bottomed out, rose by 6.9 percent and 6.5 percent respectively. This compares to a decline of 7 percent for blacks during the same time period and a drop of 5.9 percent for whites.

But don’t get too happy or too jealous yet. No one group is going employment gangbusters even though the recovery has supposedly kicked in.

“Although jobs growth for Hispanics and Asians was more rapid than for other groups, it merely kept pace with the growth in their working-age (ages 16 and older) populations. The slower rate of jobs growth for whites and blacks reflects the relatively slow growth in their populations,” Pew reported. “Thus, the share of each group’s population that is employed, the employment rate, has barely risen since the end of the recession.”

Aside from race, immigrants and men fared better than natives and women.

Immigrants, made up mainly of Hispanics and Asians, saw a 5.2 percent recovery in jobs since 2009, compared to 1.8 percent for U.S. born workers.

And after outpacing men in the recession when it came to employment opportunities, women are not falling behind the guys. Men saw a 3.5 percent rate of growth, while women experienced a dismal 0.9 percent uptick.

As for where people got jobs, three industries created the most growth for all races: professional business services; wholesale and retail; and manufacturing.

The leading source of jobs increases for Hispanics in particular were the eating, drinking and lodging services sector, creating an increase of 326,000 for this group.

Wow...what a surprise...I wonder why these illegals can find a job...when so many americans are out of work...and Eric Holder keeps filing suits against states that try to do something about illegal immigration...and the government jobs does not help the encomony...half of them should be elimated...it's the private sector that creates jobs....duh.....

Don't be an idiot. Anybody who knows me knows that I HATE illegal aliens with a passion, but that doesn't mean that all asians and hispanics are here illegally.

If you don't want Holder to sue you, try writing laws that don't violate the Constitution. It's not THAT hard.

Why are the "job creators" hiring illegals instead of American citizens?

As far as potential jobs go right now, its all about who will work for the least pay. Many people cannot afford to provide for a family on $10/hr. With gas prices the way they are, it is impossible. Hispanics and Asians tend to live with multiple family members in one household, sometimes to an extreme. This allows for them to share the costs much easier.

Employers only care about the bottom line, not the workers. We are all just statistics and numbers to them. The employers are hurting as well with this economy, but they are more apt to be able to keep their incomes where they need at the expense of the workers pay, because they can. They have plenty of workers to choose from, so they can get away with it. Until this economy picks up more, we are all screwed.

    Toasty

Indiana's Voter ID law was found Constitutional. So why is Holder suing South Carolina and Texas? Why isn't he suing Tennessee or Florida or Georgia or Michigan or any of the other States that require a Photo ID?

Floyd - Asians in America have lower unemployment rates, higher average educations and significantly higher average incomes than Whites. Your ideas about low-income crowded families applies more to White people living in Appalachia than typical Asian Americans.

Just walk into any McDonalds, Jack n the Box, Wendy's, or Burger King and it's full of illegals. Where else do you think they got the data for this story? Sure not gonna get it out of the many working here for cash and not pay their fair share of taxes as they sponge off our tax dollars. Even Wal-Mart, Kroger, have jumped on the Cho-Lo hiring frenzy. However, Wal-Mart is forcing everyone to go part-time so they don't have to pay benefits. Think about these things the next time you have you're lawn mowed by a crew of mexicans. You pay 20 bucks, they in turn suck hundreds and thousands of your tax dollars for welfare, healthcare is why you pay out the nose in the emergency room when it's your turn for services. There seriously needs to be a major crack down on illegals in this country to root them out of every business possible and fine the crap out of those that hire them. Its no difference than the crime they are committing by breaking our laws by you hiring them. Eventually neighbors will turn you in and burn your wallet in fines for hiring them.

                Wrong.

If you were in the restaurant business, you would know that none of these chain restaurants will hire without documentation. Neither do lawn companies.

If an illegal uses false documentation, then they are being paid with paychecks and are paying the same employment taxes that anyone else is. If they are buying material goods, they are paying sales tax. If they are renting an apartment, they are paying property taxes through their rent checks. No one can function in our society without paying taxes--it is simply impossible.

                  #7.4 - Wed Mar 21, 2012 3:22 PM EDT

Lin, yes they do pay sales tax and by renting, property tax, but they are also earning a minimal amount of money so their income taxes are minimal; compared to what their families are costing the states they live in - for education, free lunches, breakfasts, for health care, for food stamps, for welfare, for aid to dependent children, etc. Due to the fact that their salaries are minimal, taxed or not, their spending power is also minimal. They mostly buy food and clothing, which most states DON'T tax. They drive old cars, and most don't bother with auto insurance except during the one month they are registering their cars. When you add all the social services they receive and compare that to their "taxes" that they pay, it doesn't equal what they cost the state.

Most states have data BASES to match up when someone cancels thier ins. They have 7 days to get new insurance or turn their tags in. Its the safety inspection process that they dodge like crazy. Driving hacked up & put back together hondas with hundreds of thousands of miles & falling apart. I mean do the hispanics that drive Japanese cars really think the japanese give a rats behind about them?

                  Hey Lozano,

I don't know if you are a jester or not, but by claiming that you don't recognize geo political borders and you are just trying to feed your family is a load of BS. Illegals are a cancer on our country that needs a cure. You wouldn't like it if we invaded your countries and lowered your wages by undercutting what you would work for. You wouldn't like it if we scammed your welfare system by lying and cheating it with fraudulent information. YES, this does happen. I know many illegals that have a wife and kids, and since one parent is an illegal and works off the books, the other parent can claim that they are raising 4 kids by themselves and only show half their income. They end up with Medicaid, food stamps, free lunches, welfare, and anything else they can qualify for ILLEGALLY!

What about OUR right to support our families? Why should our families suffer so you can support yours illegally? There is a reason that we only allow so many immigrants into our country LEGALLY. We have to keep a balance to our economy and jobs. By coming here illegally, you are undercutting our economy, and ruining our way of life.

Should not god bless us too? We have worked hard to build a nice place to live, and we have a right to enjoy it. Illegal immigration might not be the only reason that this country is hurting right now, but it is one of the MOST IMPORTANT reasons it is.

Now, go ask your god if it is right to intentionally hurt others so you can prosper.

Here’s the breakdown on the share of the federal jobs by race:

                  * 65.4 percent were white.

                  * 17.9 percent were black or African American.

                  * 8.9 percent were Hispanic or Latino.

                  * 5.9 percent were Asian.

                  * 1.6 percent were American Indian or Alaska Native.

                  * 0.08 percent were persons of two or more races.

                  * 0.04 percent were Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander.

Why are Americans broken down into select groups? Arn't we all Americans? Why does MSNBC have to fit us into cubby holes?

The damn census does the same thing. All the census needs to know is your name and where you live and who lives with you. I really detest being catagorized into groups.

FudgeFactor, people are broken into groups like this to support political agendas. As a politician, you pander to one group at the expense of another group. It's easier to promote class warfare type battles than to actually address an issue. Addressing issues would require thought and tough decisions, it's much easier to pit one group against another to get your votes. The media uses groups to promote dissension in an effort to boost readership. This is much easier than using good journalism to draw in readers. After the dissension is created, the resultant violence will generate another opportunity for the media to group people. The cycle continues.

About 10,000 people per day retire. My guess is that the vast majority of these new retirees from the baby boom generation are not Asian or Hispanic. Perhaps the author should have taken this into account.

Obama will not allow the compaies to use E-Verify to see if they are illegal. Well, it could be that that most Hispanics will take whatever work they can find. I hear there are plenty of jobs in the fields of Georgia, since the new immigration laws passed, yet they cant seem to find any workers to take the hard low paying Jobs.

Blaming the illegals is like arresting the crack head for showing up at the crack house and doing nothing about the crack-house in the neighborhood.

If there were no jobs or free handouts, the illegals would go somewhere else. Illegals are just the symptoms not the problem.

They only became "low paying" after the influx of illegals started in the 80s. Until then, home construction jobs in Texas went to Texans. Now, homes in Texas are built exclusively by illegal aliens. If you get a new roof put on your house in Texas, you will have 20 of them on top of your house.

The reason is that all corporations that support Obama tell the person who is in charge of hiring who they can hire. Some say " you can only hire minorities" some say they have to be hispanics and they don't need proof of citizenship. Now they are starting " they have to be foreign ". Do not believe anything that Pew Hispanic Center says . They claim there is 12,000,000 illegal immigrants and in actuallty there is like 65-70,000,000 in the United States. Illegal immigrants are 30% of the inmates in U.S. prisons. They are a cancer on the Unites States economy but because the Democrats want them here to vote in November for Obama they will never be deported. Obama and those Democrats have broke every law to take care of illegals. It is illegal for them to be here and its illegal for them to work here. Why are they working?

As an african american male an older retired military vet (also black) told me since blacks are demanding fair treatment in the workforce that hispanics & asians are the next group to be exploited by corporate america. Followed by "they're just new N words on the block". Thats not my words but quoted by someone else. However that was 8 years ago & it appears to be very true. Companies are turning away qualified black & white workers & hiring foreigners who might (or might not) work harder for less.

I dont really have anything against another group personally but if companies dont make an effort to hire US citizens then whos going to consume their final product. It sure as hell isnt going to be the foreigner that sends their whole paycheck back home!
