Why do you accuse all pawn shops in general of dealing in stolen goods? Most pawn shop owners are hard working honest people. I'm sure the majority of shop owners go to great lengths to avoid such items. It does their business no good to be associated with stolen property. If stolen property is found in their possession, they have to relinquish it to the local police, they lose what ever money they paid out for the item. Doesn't sound like good business practice to me. I don't own a pawn shop but a close friend did. All customers (sellers) are questioned as to what/when/where they came into possession of the item for sale.If it didn't feel right the deal was not made. Any item pawned or sold required a photo ID for proof of identity so if a stolen item did get purchased, the police knew who did it. He worked closly with local police, they would give him a list weekly of items that were reported stolen to look out for. He even called the police and gave them leads to people who were trying to pawn stolen items. So get your head out of your a$$ and stop making you problems some one elses. Turn your family member into the police and have them arrested for theft..people like you are called enablers. If you had turned them in when the problem first started, you have to worry about your belongings being stolen. Fix your problem....
As a parent of a drug addict, it's all to true that a lot of stolen merchandise is sold to pawn shops. A particular one in my area has bought several thousand dollars of my property, and just gives me a hard time whenever I've shown up looking for it!
At least in my area, pawn shops are NOT the place to shop for deals. They are quite proud of their merchandise. I've seen prices at or near retail for USED stuff. You only have 24 hours to return the item if it does not work, and the quality of the items overall make for a poor gift finding experience. Beware of Xbox 360's that have been banned by the Xbox Live service for hacking. Those units end up in pawn shops.
as a person dealing with a family member with an addiction I say go for it, go to a pawnshop and buy stolen property
