Living paycheck to paycheck, or worse

A new survey confirms what many Americans already know from personal experience: Too many of us are living paycheck to paycheck.

The survey of more than 2,500 employed adults found that one-fourth said all their money was spoken for each month, leaving nothing for extras after bills and other expenses were paid for.

About one-third were in even worse shape, reporting that they don’t have enough money to make ends meet and end each month in the red.

The survey was conducted between Aug. 31 and Sept. 7 by Markco Media for the website CouponCodes4U.

Retailers have noticed it too. Speaking at an investor conference in May, a Wal-Mart executive said the mega-retailer has seen that some of their customers are particularly cash-strapped just before payday, which it blamed in part on the weak economy.

"We still see the paycheck cycle being very pronounced where the customer doesn't have a lot of money at the end of the month. They are going to smaller pack sizes; opening price point becomes more important," Wal-Mart Chief Financial Officer Charley Holley said at the Citi Global Consumer Conference.

Dear America, If you want your jobs back then roll back the Reagan tax cuts/ NAFTA/CAFTA from Bush 2 and Clinton and the recent trade agreement with China signed by Obama. As long as it is cheaper to import to the US there will be nothing "Made in the USA". Since the founders first visions of this country it has been one industrial revolution after another. The future of our country has been outsourced to other shores at pennies on the dollar. While this creates a One World Economy it lowers the status of the American people to a 3rd world service level economy. The corporations and the banks profits rose exponentially due to the savings created when the walls came down on our shores to protect the American worker. This money was used to buy influence on capital hill for more new trade agreements until we arrive where we are now. The House and Senate will not repeal tax cuts because they ARE the millionaires that would have to pay for it. The corporations will not bring the manufacturing back until it hurts there pocketbook to import. The banks will not open lines of credit to an American People since they already know this country is going downhill. It was not Obama's fault though. We the people share the blame for not rallying against Capitol Hill the past 3 decades to prevent the dismantling of our economic infrastructure. Now our children have to suffer the imbalance of jobs and fortune. I do not see an easy way out of this but I believe it will take being honest at the bargaining table first and so far the congress and senate can't seem to even do that. Pray for us all. H S Wicks

My wife and I are doing quite well these days. We are currently retired at the age of 61 and 59 respectfully. My wife was a Registered Nurse for 30 years, and I had a dual career beginning with 20 years of service in the U.S Navy (as a submariner for most of that time), and later as a consultant in Emergency Management (primarily to National Laboratories and the Department of Energy). We put 5 children through college, sold our home and virtually everything else we owned in 2009 at a profit (in Denver, CO), and moved to the Republic of Panama. We have no debt – never really did have much debt other than a mortgage – and we left behind many of the problems facing most Americans today. We live a very comfortable life here in
Panama, and have wisely invested our money for the long haul that I manage personally. Not wishing to be political, but we need to stop the madness, and quit depending on local, State, and federal governments for a hand out and to solve all of our problems through some form of legislation (every law costs money – usually in more taxes). The trend the country is taking toward socialism and a welfare state is frightening. Have we learned nothing from the crisis in Greece, and in Europe overall. America needs to wake up and return to the principles that made it the best country on this earth!
